Epigenetics

"In his book, The Biology of Belief, Doctor Lipton explains the foundation of epigenetics, and how the true secret to life does not lie within your DNA, but rather within the mechanisms of the cell membrane. In this way – which is contrary to conventional medical science – it is actually the cell’s membrane -- operating in response to environmental signals picked up by the membrane’s receptors -- that control the “reading” of the genes inside. This is very relevant to the world that we are in because we have to take back a belief that we have power over our lives. Because our current perception is that we are victims, and since perceptions control life, if you believe you are a victim, you become a victim. When we change our perception."

"Epigenetics is unraveling a continuous cross talk between our genetic profile and the environment. Indeed, genome is much more “flexible” than previously thought and such flexibility underscores the relevance of “good eating” for maintenance of good health. Future nutritionists will have to face the challenge of elucidating the mechanism of nutrition-induced epigenetic changes during pre and post-natal life, to optimize nutritional interventions in a “personalized” perspective.”   Genes & Nutrition

"Traditionally, we understand that individual phenotypes result primarily from inherited genetic variants together with environmental exposures. However, many studies showed that a remarkable variety of factors including environmental agents, parental behaviors, maternal physiology, xenobiotics, nutritional supplements and others lead to epigenetic changes that can be transmitted to subsequent generations without continued exposure. Recent discoveries show transgenerational epistasis and transgenerational genetic effects where genetic factors in one generation affect phenotypes in subsequent generation without inheritance of the genetic variant in the parents. Together these discoveries implicate a key signaling pathway, chromatin remodeling, methylation, RNA editing and micro-RNA biology. This exceptional mode of inheritance complicates the search for disease genes and represents perhaps an adaptation to transmit useful gene expression profiles from one generation to the next.”    Human Molecular Genetics

In four weeks, a high-glucose diet was found to shut down the gene that creates digestive enzymes. Food wouldn’t move through the digestive tract, and it couldn’t be absorbed.   Molecular Biology Reports. 2010 Apr; 37(4):1867-1874. Note this is a great example of epigenetics in action, simply avoid the sugar and your epigenome will not be rearranged negatively

"Findings published online on May 26, 2010 in the journal PLoS ONE (Public Library of Sciences ONE) demonstrate a protective effect for brief periods of exercise against stress-induced damage to telomeres: pieces of DNA that cap and protect the ends of chromosomes which play an important role in cellular aging.”   Life Extension

"Epigenetics is a unifying theory in which many health problems, ranging from cancer to cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders, can all be caused at least in part by altered "histone modifications," and their effects on the reading of DNA in cells. We believe that many diseases which have aberrant gene expression at their root can be linked to how DNA is packaged, and the actions of enzymes such as histone deacetylases, or HDACs," As recently as 10 years ago we knew almost nothing about HDAC dysregulation in cancer or other diseases, but it's now one of the most promising areas of health-related research."    Rod Dashwood, PhD Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University

Our Static Genome Has a Dynamic Expression

“The good news ... is that ‘HDAC inhibitors’ can stop this degenerative process, and some of them have already been identified in common foods. Examples include sulforaphane in broccoli, indole-3-carbinol in cruciferous vegetables, and organosulfur compounds in vegetables like garlic and onions.”   Eurekalert April 28, 2010, Note the common element SULFUR IMO make sure  your take some MSM often

"You are in control of your genes … and are changing them often -- daily and perhaps even hourly -- based on the foods you eat, the air you breathe, and the thoughts you think. It’s your environment and lifestyle that dictates your tendency to express disease, and this new realization is set to make major waves in the future of disease prevention -- including one day educating people on how to fight disease at the epigenetic level. As you age, your genome does not change but your epigenome changes dramatically, especially during critical periods of life, such as adolescence. It is influenced by physical and emotional stresses -- how you respond to everything that happens in your environment, from climate change to childhood abuse.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"One of the most cutting-edge fields of medicine is epigenetics, which has shown that your lifestyle plays a significant role in how your genes are expressed. The widely accepted dogma that your genes control your health destiny is now being completely uprooted, as your genetic code is not set in stone. Rather it is constantly changing based on factors like your diet and stress levels.”     Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“Eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, garlic and onions helps to activate tumor suppressor genes that fight cancer. Likewise, researchers revealed that drinking a probiotic-rich beverage influenced the activity of hundreds of your genes in a positive manner. To put it simply, the more dietary and lifestyle habits you engage in that positively influence your genetic expression, the more protection you’ll naturally receive against a host of chronic illnesses.”     Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

The new field of epigenetics is rapidly revealing how people, plants and animals do start with a certain genetic code at conception. But, the choice of which genes are "expressed," or activated, is strongly affected by environmental influences. The expression of genes can change quite rapidly over time, they can be influenced by external factors, those changes can be passed along to offspring, and they can literally hold the key to life and death.

Vitamin D is Critical in Reading Our Genome

The simple primal act of getting LOTS of the high noon sun on your bare “unprotected” skin in large amounts just may be the most important single thing you can do for your health. If the sun casts a shadow longer than you are tall you cannot make adequate vitamin D from the sun. You MUST take vitamin D3 at the daily rate of about 1000 IU/20 pounds of body weight.

"Without sufficient amounts of vitamin D the cell cannot access it's DNA library and its functions are thereby impaired. The cell needs vitamin D to make the tools that are needed for everyday activity. This is why vitamin D can function in so many tissues and affects so many different diseases and health conditions."  Doctor Robert Heaney Vitamin D Researcher

"If you want to maintain a level of 32 ng/ml you need to ingest 4,000 IU of vitamin D3/day. IMO the upper safe dose is 10,000 IU a day. If you have a serious health problem these large doses are not going to hurt."   Doctor Robert Heaney Vitamin D Researcher

"A new model of environment/gene interaction: studies of MS show that vitamin D interacts directly with genes to control autoimmune reactions and disease in a way not anticipated by previous ideas about action of genes or vitamins or of nature versus nurture."   Good Vitamin D Treatise

As doctor Heaney says you need about 32 ng/ml just to access your genome. The vitamin D must be operating in the creation of your epigenome. About 85% of us have less than this. IMO this may account for MANY of the "health problems" we are experiencing in today's world of artificial food and senseless, pernicious noon sun avoidance.

It is What you DO not who you are

"Thirteen percent of the study participants were still living at 90 years of age. These survivors were likelier at 50 to have been nonsmokers, drink moderate amounts of coffee and have have lower serum cholesterol compared to men who failed to reach this age. Yet the number of years reached by their parents did not appear to influence their own longevity."   Life Extension

The genome you were born with must be read and expressed. To do this a layer of biochemical reactions exists, your epigenome.  Your epigenome turns on and off the individual genes in your genome. Your epigenome is deeply influenced by how you live your life, what you eat, your emotional balance and perhaps even your socioeconomic status.

An Example of Epigenetics in Action

"Two groups with insulin resistance were fed identical diets except one group got their carbs from wheat, oats and potatoes; the other from rye. After twelve weeks fat biopsies showed in the wheat group sixty-two genes that promote inflammation, produce stress molecules and hormones that promote insulin resistance and obesity were "turned on"; in the rye group seventy-one genes that improve insulin function and prevent cell death were 'turned on."    Doctor Mark Hyman MD

In the above clinical trial with grains we see epigenetics in action. In the wheat group sixty two genes were turned on that were not turned on in the rye group and likewise with the rye group genes were turned on that were not turned on in the wheat group. The way you live your life, what you eat, do and feel will alter your gene expression for good or bad. The lesson live, eat and treat the world right and you may live long and prosper.
