Cranberry Protocol

In summer you can eat half-defrosted formerly frozen cranberries one at a time as a cold treat. Try it!

"New studies are continually finding how unique cranberries are, and that their potential health benefits are impressive. There seems to be no denying that cranberries are antioxidant-rich and deliver unique proanthocyanidins (PACs) that are responsible for cranberries' beneficial anti-adhesion properties. Cranberry PACs have been shown to protect against P-fimbriated Escherichia coli (E. coli), which is thought to be responsible for as much as 95% of urinary tract infections, and other strains of E. coli bacteria through anti-adhesion properties, so that pathogenic bacteria are unable to adhere to our cells, multiply and cause an infection..”  Cranberries Super Antibacterial Food

“I recommend cranberry for UTI. But if you drink the juice you have to drink a lot. It’s usually easier to munch on the dried berries or take capsules.” James A, Duke, PhD

“In vitro studies have shown that cranberry juice also inhibits the adhesion of  H. pylori to human gastric mucosa (7). A trial done in China suggests that regular consumption of cranberry juice can suppress H. pylori infection, a major cause of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer (6). Cranberry juice is also used to prevent gum disease.  Studies suggest that cranberry constituents can prevent plaque formation and the development of gum disease by demonstrating anti-colonizing and anti-adhesion properties in plaque-causing bacteria (8) (9).  Extracts of cranberries have been shown to have anti-proliferative effects against several cancer cell lines in vitro including prostate (10) (11), liver (12), breast (13), colon (11) (14), and oral (11). Patients on warfarin should use cranberry juice with caution (15).” Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

“This is where strawberries have a one-two punch. They reduce LDL and reduce its oxidation. Berries in general are just jam-packed with God-made phytochemicals that protect your body. This is not limited to strawberries, but most all berries. I grow raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries. If you can't grow them, Costco has come to the rescue. It now carries frozen organic blueberries. Organic strawberries may be next, especially if you ask. Please add lots and lots of berries to your diet. Your eyes, heart, blood vessels — and taste buds will be most grateful.” Doctor Robert Rowen MD

“Cranberries may help fight ulcers by preventing H. Pylori, the bacterium implicated in peptic ulcers from adhering to the stomach wall.” Zhang et al

"In a group of healthy Danish women 500 ml of cranberry juice was found to markedly increase the blood plasma antioxidant activity about one to two hours after ingestion."   Life Extension

"A rich source of flavonoids cranberries are also arousing interest for their potential to reduce the formation of arterial plaque."   Life Extension

"Cranberries help by many mechanisms to inhibit the growth and proliferation of lung, breast and colon cancer."   Life Extension

"Cranberries constituents may also help reduce inflammation in the gingival or gum tissues which could offer protection against peritonitis."   Life Extension

"Cranberry consumption is mostly studied in relation to the beneficial effects of A-type procyanidins on urinary tract health. However, when the anti-atherosclerotic actions of OPCs are also considered, the daily consumption of cranberry juice is likely to have multiple health benefits."   OPCs Show Support for Cardiovascular Health

“Cranberries are packed with compounds called proanthocyanidins (PACs). These incredible plant polyphenols promote apoptosis in human ovarian cancer cells, prostate cancer cells, and neuroblastoma cells. They directly reduce cancer-cell division and have cell-killing effects on certain cancer cells.”    Doctor Robert Rowen MD

"I strongly suggest a diet rich in any and all edible berries for cancer. A German colleague of mine revealed the likely secret behind berries' cancer fighting ability. For the normal cells, these chemicals are powerful antioxidants, protecting them from everyday damage. But cancer cells are highly reduced. To them, these chemicals are actually oxidants. Moving the oxidation/reduction potential of a cancer cell toward normal is a great way to induce it to commit apoptosis (cell suicide). If you have cancer, or are at risk, this is important information. I don't think that you can overdose on berries. Eat as many as you can.”   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

"Cranberries contain two powerful flavonoids quercetin and myricetin and the dark versions also contain kaempferol. Each of these compounds has been shown to prevent genetic changes that can lead to cancer."   Prevention

"The class of polyphenols known as anthocyanins composed of deep red, blue and purple pigments possess powerful antioxidant properties. Fruits and vegetables of these colors blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, black currents beets and acai are especially rich in anthocyanins. They are highly bioavailable and can significantly increase levels of other beneficial polyphenols in the blood."  Life Extension

"Walnuts contain ellagic acid also found in strawberries, cranberries, raspberries and grapes. Ellagic acid a phenolic acid with potent antioxidant activity that also helps maintain levels and promotes production of antioxidant enzymes."   Doctor Al Sears MD

"Cranberries both strengthen your arteries directly and weaken the force directed against them. Cranberries' powerful antioxidants peonidin and petundin resist breakdown in your body and are found in higher levels in cranberries than in other fruit."   Doctor David Williams MD

"Cranberry and pomegranate extracts rich in polyphenols have nave been shown to have potent iron-chelating capabilities in some cases completely suppressing iron-catalyzed oxidant reactions."   Life Extension

Best Natural Diuretic – Cranberry or Watermelon?

Cranberries Super Food

"Research shows that not only do cranberry products not unfavorably affect normal bacteria, but in fact they also help eliminate certain disease-causing germs living in the genito-urinary tract in up to 42% of patients.18 Similarly, studies show that cranberry supplementation does not have any negative interactions with existing antibiotics.43"   The Dangers Of Using Antibiotics To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

Cranberries are a Flavonoid (See Flavonoid Protocol) rich fruit loaded with health. Cranberries help prevent and treat urinary tract infections, promote gastrointestinal and oral health, prevent the formation of kidney (See Kidney Protection Protocol) stones, lower and protect LDL (See LDL Protocol) and raise HDL (See HDL Protocol), aid in prevention and recovery from stroke (See Stroke Protection Protocol), strengthen and protect your arteries (See Atherosclerosis Protection Protocol), are anti-E. coli and even help prevent cancer (See Cancer Prevention Protocol).

Cranberries have been shown to inhibit the adherence of E. coli to the urethra and bladder and is thus effective in treating infections of these organs. Cranberries is a similar fashion inhibit the adherence of h. pylori to the stomach lining and thus IMO are the go to treatment for initial ulcer problems.

The same mechanism cranberries use against E. coli and h, pylori may also be employed against cancer. How I do not know but the evidence is clearly there.

All this is in a tart fruit you just CANNOT pass up.

Dark Berries

The dark blue, purple or black berries seem to be especially healthful. Blueberry  and bilberry are  close relatives of the cranberry and may many of the same health benefits. Black raspberries contain many vitamins, minerals, phenols and phytosterols, which are known to individually prevent cancer in animals.

Cranberry Benefits

"Six months of supplementation with 1,500 mg per day of dried powdered cranberries significantly improved measures of prostate health.. Unlike currently used medication for prostatitis and lower urinary tract symptoms  LUTS, cranberry has no adverse effects. Our findings may assist men suffering from LUTS, and also their clinicians, to decide on a treatment that is both inexpensive and natural, like cranberry,"    Cranberry’s Benefits Appear to Extend to Prostate Health

“Cranberries are incredibly rich in another antioxidant flavonoid called quercetin, which also produces strong anti-inflammatory effects in arthritic joints. And the flavonoid content of the humble strawberry is so remarkable, it blocks the pain and inflammation caused by the COX-2 enzyme just as well as high-priced COX-2 inhibitor drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex. Like these drugs, flavonoids block the pain and inflammation messages of COX-2 without inhibiting the non-inflammatory COX-l. But strawberries won’t produce side effects like heart muscle damage and increased risk of heart attack the way these drugs do.”   Doctor Steven Sinatra MD

"Cranberry and pomegranate extracts rich in polyphenols have nave been shown to have potent iron-chelating capabilities in some daces completely suppressing iron-catalyzed oxidant reactions."   Life Extension, Note most men have excess iron

"It’s important to do your research before choosing a cranberry supplement. A 2012 study surveying cranberry supplements found that only four of 19 products studied actually provided 36 mg of total proanthocyanidins per day; some provided none at all.46 In order to take advantage of cranberry’s benefits, make sure you’re taking a cranberry supplement that’s derived from whole fruit, and that will deliver the recommended 36 mg/day of the proanthocyanidins that prevent bacteria from sticking. "   The Dangers Of Using Antibiotics To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

“The American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon L) contains compounds — such as proanthocyanidins (PACs) — that provide meaningful antioxidant, anti-adhesion and anti-microbial properties that stave off infection. Cranberry PACs interrupt the ability for bacteria to communicate with each other, spread and become virulent — a process known as quorum sensing. The cranberry extract successfully interferes with the chain of events associated with the spread and severity of chronic bacterial infections.”   Cranberry Extract Now Proven to Scramble Bacteria Communication, Cuts Virulence

Vitamin B17, Amygdalin in Cranberries

Amygdalin, often referred to as vitamin B17, is found in usually small amounts in over 1000 foods including cherry pits  as well as apricot, peach, plum and prune pits and apple seeds. Cranberries also provides a good source of amygdalin. As you will see vitamin B17 is one vitamin you do not want to be without if you wish to avoid cancer.

Avoid the Sugar

Most Cranberry Juice sold in the supermarket is loaded with sugar (See Sugar Protocol) or even worse HFCS (See HFCS Protocol) and you should avoid it. I buy fresh cranberries on sale around Thanksgiving and Christmas and freeze them.  I used to cook them with a little sugar but I cut down the amount until now I can eat them without any sugar. Try it. Start out with a half-cup or so and cut it in half each time. If you must sweeten them you can use xylitol (See Xylitol Protocol). I add the xylitol to the cold Cranberries.

Eat Cranberries RAW

After I learned to eat the cooked Cranberries with no added sugar the next step was eating them raw. Raw cranberries contain considerably more nutrients than cooked, just like most other foods. If you eat them RAW you may get two to three times the benefits. Take half a standard 12-ounce bag and blend them well with enough water for a thin mixture. The secret to drinking it is to sip a small amount and suck it up only to the roof of your mouth before swallowing. Drinking it this way it may take you a half hour or so to sip it all. This technique also works for other bitter (See Bitters Protocol) or otherwise somewhat distasteful things you MUST drink. Adding a small raw beet (See Beet Protocol) will make the mixture sweeter and much easier to drink and Lord knows we NEED the raw beet. You can eat the frozen cranberries in the summer as a cold treat.

In summer you can eat half-defrosted formerly frozen cranberries one at a time as a cold treat. Try it!

Cranberries Limit Pathogenic Adhesion

“These results highlighted for the first time that to achieve a bacterial anti-adhesion effect in urine, 36 mg of cranberry PAC equivalents per day is effective, but 72 mg may offer [day and night] protection, The kinetic data revealed that while there was good activity for both 36 mg and 72 mg after six hours, this decreased after 24 hours, “suggesting that it may be beneficial to consume cranberry in two split doses of 36 mg in the morning and evening,”   Cranberry Dosing for Urinary Health, Note Life Extension suggests 1200 mg of cranberry extract/day for UTI problems

“Cranberries and cranberry juice help prevent UTIs through their negative effect on bacteria. It was first thought that cranberries kill bacteria by acidifying urine, but this has been disproved. Rather, cranberries prevent bacteria from attaching to the lining cells of the urinary tract. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM, recommends use of cranberry juice to prevent these infections, particularly in women who experience them often. Cranberries may also help control infections that are ongoing, but this possibility needs further study.”   Cranberries and Infection

"They looked at women who had chronic urinary infections despite regular use of antibiotics;  The study used a combination of lingonberries [a close relative of cranberries] and cranberries. ,,, They received the long term benefit [vastly lower infection even after supplementation stopped] either from the bacteria not being there anymore or having become domesticated so they don't attack us."   Doctor Lon Jones D,O.

"But cranberries and cranberry juice are probably best known for their ability to help prevent urinary tract infections,110,111 and are believed to work by inhibiting the adherence of E. coli to the urethra and bladder wall, making it easier for the body to flush them out.112,113 Similarly, they may protect against gastric ulcers by preventing Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium implicated in this condition, from adhering to the stomach lining.114,115"   Uncovering the Broad-Spectrum Protection of Anthocyanins

"Cranberry products, long known for their effectiveness in preventing urinary tract infections, already contain naturally specialized molecules that function in exactly the same way as FimH inhibitors.5 Studies show that cranberry juice and extracts inhibit bacterial binding throughout the urinary tract, stopping potential urinary tract infections before they can even begin."   The Dangers Of Using Antibiotics To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

"Cranberries contain a specific group of polyphenol molecules called proanthocyanidins.21-23 Similar to FimH inhibitors, these molecules may prevent bacteria from sticking to urinary tract lining cells.24,25 While antioxidant proanthocyanidins are found in many plant-based foods, research shows that those from cranberries appear to have more significant anti-adhesion properties.26 Multiple laboratory studies have demonstrated in detail just how effective proanthocyanidins are at reducing bacterial stickiness. One study found that cranberry powder from whole berries decreased the number of bacteria sticking to cells lining the urinary tract from 6.9 to just 1.6 organisms per cell.27"    The Dangers Of Using Antibiotics To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

"There’s growing evidence that cranberry extracts reduce the adhesion of other bacterial and yeast species that are often responsible for urinary tract and other infections, giving them a considerably broader spectrum than is likely with FimH inhibitors.32-36 Proanthocyanidins impair E. coli’s swimming ability, limiting their ability to move around even prior to latching on to bladder lining cells,32 which increases the chances of eliminating the organisms from the urinary tract before they can cause an infection."   The Dangers Of Using Antibiotics To Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

A component of Cranberries limits the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the urethra  to help avoid UTIs, the adhesion of h pylori to the stomach gastric epithelial cells to help avoid ulcers and the adhesion of bacteria in the nose and lungs which can cause MANY problems.

My daughter claims unsweetened cranberry juice was more efficacious for her UTI than the cranberry capsules.

Stop UTIs Without Antibiotics

Life Extension Whole Fruit Cranberry Supplement   Note this is a superior cranberry supplement IMO. You may be able  to take two or so per WEEK and receive good UTI protection. One a day for serious UTI problems of course.
