Thirst is not a reliable indicator of your need for water especially as we grow older. Juice, coffee, soda and other liquids are NOT substitutes for water. You constantly require water to transport the nutrients you eat to each of your cells. Drink lots of good clean water (See Water Protocol) until your urine runs crystal clear. There should be NO hint of yellow in your urine stream. The urine once it gets into the toilet bowl will appear lightly yellow; this is OK. The darker your urine the more water you need to drink.

IMO a good habit to acquire is to drink a large glass of good water IMMEDIATELY after urinating non-clear urine. Get in the habit of frequent urination to check the color of your urine. Always check your urine color. This simple habit cluster will assure you are continuously topped up on the most precious liquid in your body. It is possible but rare to over consume water. If there is no yellow in the bowl perhaps you are drinking too much water, back off a bit until the yellow reappears. Too much water is no good as it washes out too many minerals, vitamins and other good water soluble things.

This simple protocol works most of the time. Taking a B complex vitamin will color your urine yellow; beets will often turn your urine light reddish, asparagus light green, don’t worry about these light colors. Incidentally being able to discern these light colors in your urine is a sign you are topped up in your water.

  

Water and Exercise

When heading out for a full day exercise session I try to drink at least a half gallon of water before leaving the house; a gallon in the summer heat. Say I want to leave at noon; so starting at 8 every half hour I will drink a glass of water on the half hour. Of course this means I will be urinating frequently at the start of my exercise period. Using this method you do not have to worry about carrying external water with you and you are assured of not getting dehydrated. After four hours of continuous aerobic exercise my urine will usually still run clear. In very hot weather you may require more water. Your urine will ALWAYS tell you when you require water.

  

Water and Trace Nutrients

“When a person is deficient in minerals, particularly trace minerals, he does not retain enough of the liquids he drinks--instead of hydrating the body, water is quickly eliminated via the kidneys. This is another reason the body retains feces in the bowel, in order to extract as much water as possible.” Martin J. Lara, Salt Deficiency: The Cause of All Serious Diseases

 

“Drinking at least 12 glasses of pure filtered water daily is the best insurance against premature aging. The ideal drinking water for the human body should be slightly alkaline and should contain some minerals like calcium and magnesium. Water filtered through a good reverse osmosis system tends to be neutral to slightly alkaline and is recommended for regular use provided that minerals are supplemented with vegetables or nutritional supplementation.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

When you drink a LOT of water as required you will wash out some good trace minerals and other essential nutrients. We must take care to replace these nutrients. Eating sea salt is one way. Making sure you get all your essential water soluble vitamins and nutrients on a continuous basis is another thing we must continuously do.

    

Drinking Water and Constipation

As the last part of your digestive process if your body requires water ALL the water will be pulled from your stool resulting often in constipation (See Constipation Protection Protocol). If you have very dark urine the odds are good you will be constipated. When your urine runs clear the chances are you will not be constipated.
