Vitamin B12 Protocol

“In a study involving more than 100 volunteers aged 61 to 87; individuals with lower vitamin B12 levels at the start of the study had a greater decrease in brain volume. Those with the lowest B12 levels had a six fold greater rate of brain volume loss compared with those who had the highest levels. However, none of the participants were actually deficient in vitamin B12 -- they just had low levels within a normal range.” Neurology 2008; 71: 826-832

“Vitamin B12 is not absorbed from plant sources. Modern soy products increase the body's need for B12.”  Soybeans: Chemistry & Technology Vol 1 1972

”Researchers from Oxford University and the University of Oslo report an association between decreased levels of vitamin B12 and a decline in brain volume. Reduced brain volume, or brain atrophy, has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and is used as a marker of the disease’s progression.” Neurology® September 9, 2008

“Increased homocysteine levels in the central nervous system characterize patients fulfilling the criteria for both fibromyalgia and CFS. A vitamin B12 deficiency can be considered a contributing factor to the higher homocysteine elevations found in these patient groups.” Regland et al

“A vitamin B12 deficiency will result in impaired nerve function which can cause numbness, pins-and-needles sensations or a burning feeling in the feet, as well as impaired mental function, which in the elderly can mimic Alzheimer’s disease.”  Murray & Pizzorno

“An association between decreased levels of vitamin B12 and a decline in brain volume was detected. Decreased brain volume has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamin 12 deficiency is a public health problem especially among the elderly, so more vitamin B12 intake could help reverse this.” Vogiatzoglou et al

”Listen to this nonsense… They say you need just 6 micrograms of vitamin B12 a day for “optimum health.” Clinical studies and my own research show the number is MUCH higher. Vitamin B12 is a critical nutrient. When your levels drop, you’re more likely to become confused, suffer “brain fog” and have memory problems. Even worse, your homocysteine goes through the roof. Vitamin B12 is one of the key nutrients that brings your homocysteine down – dramatically improving your heart’s health. But you need at least 100 micrograms – NOT the tiny, ineffective 6 micrograms our government recommends. In one study from Oxford in England, researchers needed as much as 500 micrograms of B12 to bring down homocysteine.1 I’ve confirmed these findings in my own practice. I routinely prescribe B12 to my patients for homocysteine reduction. And I see consistent successful results when their blood tests come back. But only at higher levels. Our government’s recommendation falls short – and that puts you at risk. Numbers like this make me wonder... what is your government thinking?”  Doctor Al Sears MD

“A common cause of memory loss is insufficient supply of necessary nutrients to the brain. If the blood is "thick" with cholesterol and triglycerides, the amount of nutrient-rich blood that can pass through the blood brain barrier decreases. Malnourishment of the brain can occur, especially if the condition is chronic in nature. Deficiencies in amino acids and B vitamins, especially Vitamins B6 and B12, are other modifiable causes of dementia. Deficiency of Vitamin B12 produces pseudo-AD symptoms. 25% of people over age 60 - 69 and 40% of people over age 80 are deficient in Vitamin B12, since older people produce insufficient intrinsic factor, a substance necessary for the absorption of Vitamin B12 from the intestines. No one should accept a diagnosis of AD without first undergoing a trial of intensive nutritional therapy, especially Vitamin B12 injections.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

"What's more years of psychoanalysis will not reverse the depression that comes from profound omega 3 EFA deficiencies, a lack of vitamin B12, a low functioning thyroid or a chronic mercury toxicity." Doctor Mark Hyman MD

"Overwhelming evidence links folate, B12 and B6 levels to depression and mood disorders. More than one quarter of all severe depression can be cured with B12 shots." Doctor Mark Hyman

"The older you get the more your digestive system breaks down, especially if you have been following the standard American diet. Specifically the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid which releases vitamin B 12 from your food. The use of antacids or anti ulcer drugs will also lower your stomach acid secretion and decrease your ability to absorb vitamin B 12.  Infection with Helicobacter pylori, a common contributor to stomach ulcers, can also result in vitamin B12 deficiency. However the main cause of vitamin B 12 deficiency is a term researchers call food-cobalamin malabsorption syndrome.  Cobalamin is the scientific term for vitamin B12. This typically results when your stomach lining loses its ability to produce intrinsic factor which is a protein that binds to vitamin B12 and allows your body to absorb it at the end of your small intestine." Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"Women with low blood levels of vitamin B-12 are at increased risk of having a child with neural tube defects, according to the findings of a new study. The risk of neural tube defects was found to be five times higher among women with the lowest levels of vitamin B-12, compared to women with the highest B-12 levels."  Low B-12 Levels in Mothers May Increase Risk of Defects in Babies

"What can you do if your levels vitamin B12 is low? First, stop taking acid-blocking drugs. Stomach acid is an absolute requirement for good B12 absorption. Second, you can try taking B12 supplements (as Cyanocobalamin - 1,000 mcg daily). They do work. But your results will vary depending on your stomach acid levels. I recommend most people over 50 take B12 by periodic injections." Doctor Robert Rowen MD, Note sub-lingual Cyanocobalamin also works for most people

"Vitamin B12 – This cheap nutrient protects your heart by reducing blood levels of a simple inflammatory protein known as homocysteine. But recent research also shows it prevents your cells from dying young. It does this by lengthening your DNA’s telomeres.”  Doctor Al Sears MD

"Individuals treating diabetes with metformin are advised to monitor their levels of vitamin B12. Metformin might reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Treatment includes vitamin B12 injections. A vitamin B12 injection must be administered to people that have problems with nutrient absorption. This is because some individuals, such as older people, patients with pernicious anemia, and those with achlorhydria or intestinal disorders, may have problems absorbing vitamin B12 from food. Oral supplements do not help in many cases of deficiency."   Vitamin B12: Functions, deficiency, and sources

Vitamin B12 is Critical

"Researchers have found that seniors with the highest levels of two critical B vitamins are also the least likely to battle depression. The same ones I've been telling you about for years: B6 and B12, which come naturally from a diet high in meats and fish. Researchers looked at data on some 3,500 seniors in Chicago, and found that depression risk dropped by 2 percent for every 10-milligram increase in vitamin B6 and 10-microgram increase in B12. I'll tell you what's really going on here. Most people simply don't get large enough amounts of these nutrients from food to make a difference. You can change that, starting tonight, by putting liver on the menu. It's packed with B12, and is a pretty good source of B6 too. Forget two birds with one stone -- you want two livers a week.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

“When researchers studied 300 vegetarian patients at Hiranandani Hospital in India for a year, they were stunned to find that 70 percent of them were either suffering from heart disease or were at high risk of heart attack. The reason was pretty simple: Nearly all of the patients were badly deficient in vitamin B12, an essential nutrient found in meat. That deficiency caused a surge in levels of homocysteine -- a much better marker of heart risk than cholesterol. The high homocysteine levels led to atherosclerosis -- hard, narrow arteries that make the heart work overtime and put the patient at risk for heart attack and stroke.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

“Wright’s team found that B12 interacts with 41 different proteins in the bacterium, and … is central to the regulation of folate, ubiquinone, and methionine — substances crucial to the ability of microbial cells to create energy, build proteins, repair DNA and grow. The findings about methionine show an expanded influence of B12 compared to what has been known. The vitamin also changes the instructions it sends to genes depending on whether it’s day or night — not a surprise in a community of organisms for which light is a central driver.”   Big Trouble for the Vitamin B12 Deficient

Vitamin B12 is so important your young healthy body stores many years worth in your liver.  Up to twenty year’s worth although you may have three years or less. If you are 50 or older there is a fair chance you have little or NONE. If you are feeling poorly and out of energy constantly. try a Vitamin B12 shot the next time you see a doctor. If you immediately pick up you will know your liver is out of B12.

An estimated 120 million Americans have low to NO B12 in their bodies. Those with NONE may not have much time left on this earth.

Symptoms of vitamin B-12 Deficiency

Capture

Few good Sources of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is not well absorbed from plant sources. The only reliable and absorbable sources of vitamin B12 are animal products, especially organ meats and eggs.  No plant or animal has been shown able to make B12; the only source of B12 may be microorganisms in an animal’s body. Find an organic free-range meat supplier and pick up some chicken liver (See Animal Liver Protocol) once in awhile. Soy products increase the body's need for and can deplete your B12.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is extremely common in strict vegetarians and vegans. Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal tissues, including foods like beef, liver, clams, lamb, venison, salmon, shrimp, scallops, poultry and eggs. I rely on chicken liver, eggs and Methylcobalamin sublingual B 12 supplements.

The few plant foods that are sources of B12 are actually B12 analogs. An analog is a substance that blocks the uptake of true B12, so your body’s need for the nutrient actually increases; soy supplies these analogs in quantity so your need for the real vitamin B12 increases.

Vitamin B12 is required to

  • Make your red blood cells

  • Make, protect and operate your nerves

  • Make your proteins

  • Help produce energy

  • Good Circulation

  • Good Immune response

  • Proper Brain Functioning

  • Digest and absorb food

  • Process fat

  • Mood Regulation

  • Process carbs

  • Convert the toxic homocysteine back the harmless amino acid cysteine

As we grow older it becomes harder for most of us to assimilate Vitamin B12. Some evidence indicates that vitamin B12 deficiency is a major cause of elevated homocysteine (See Homocysteine Protocol) levels in people over the age of 50 or so. Absorption of vitamin B12 from food requires normal function of the stomach, pancreas and small intestine.

 Reasons for not absorbing B12

“Vitamin B12 is connected to the proteins in food. Once it’s consumed, the hydrochloric acid in your stomach separates out the B12, which then combines with a compound known as intrinsic factor so it can be absorbed by your intestines. New cell production and maintenance, as well as DNA synthesis, makes vitamin B12 vital for health. Left unattended, low vitamin B12 levels could result in neurological problems or inefficient blood cell production. One indication is a “pins and needles” sensation resembling electric shock waves due to low oxygen levels. Other symptoms include.”   Big Trouble for the Vitamin B12 Deficient

"Mental Problems" often a Lack of Vitamin B12

Often what is suspected as dementia (See Dementia Protection Protocol), depression and Alzheimer's in seniors and others is a mere lack of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 especially is difficult to get in an incapacitated senior. A Vitamin B12 shot may demonstrate a lack with the immediate recovery of function shortly after the shot. It is very difficult to replenish your liver’s B12 levels once they have been depleted and many elders depend on the shot.

Soy Depletes Vitamin B12

“Vitamin B12 is not absorbed from plant sources. Modern soy products increase the body's need for B12.”  Soybeans: Chemistry & Technology Vol 1 1972

Soy contains vitamin B12 analogs. An analog is a substance that blocks the uptake of true B12, so your body’s need for the nutrient actually increases; soy supplies these analogs in quantity so your need for the real vitamin B12 increases. However to absorb your B12 soy must not be present. If you are daily eating the soy poison this is very difficult.

Soy products increase the body's need for and can deplete your B12.

IMO this DAILY consumption of soy, it is found in most processed products, is an important reason many seniors and others do poorly. The proven depletion of your CRITICAL vitamin 12 is but one reason.

Sublingual vitamin B12

Seniors and people having trouble with their digestive systems will profit by taking a sublingual (See Sublingual Protocol) form of B12 that passes directly into the blood stream in your mouth and does not need to be digested in your GI tract.

I take a Methylcobalamin sublingual form of B12 from time to time. The usual vitamin B12 supplement is made with the inexpensive Cyanocobalamin which many older people cannot convert to the bioavailable form of B12, Methylcobalamin. IMO research this and work with an Integrative Doctor if required to get your liver Vitamin B12 stores back up.

I have found if I take a sublingual vitamin B-12 immediately before exercising I often have excess energy and can extend my exercise period.

Animal Liver is a great source of Vitamin B12

“In a Swedish study each increase in blood B12 levels by a single tiny unit -– called a "picomole" -- led to a 2 percent dip in Alzheimer's risk, according to the study in Neurology. What's more, the researchers found that every micromolar rise in the inflammation marker homocysteine upped Alzheimer's risk by 16 percent."   Doctor William Douglass MD, Note homocysteine is HUGE and is prevented in part by vitamin B12

"Most people simply don't get large enough amounts of these nutrients [vitamins B12 and B6] from food to make a difference. You can change that, starting tonight, by putting liver on the menu. It's packed with B12, and is a pretty good source of B6 too. Forget two birds with one stone -- you want two livers a week.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

Animal liver contains so much Vitamin B12 that some is absorbed even with inadequate intrinsic factor. Liver was used medically to treat low B12 until the last half century. It’s not a bad idea for all of us to eat this salubrious food from time to time. I usually eat my liver with a little betaine (See Betaine Protocol) and digestive enzymes (See Digestive Enzymes Protocol) to assure stomach acid and its proper digestion.

Avoid for Vitamin B12 Absorption

  • Antacids

  • Caffeine

  • Cyanocobalamin as a vitamin B12 supplement use Methylcobalamin

  • H. Pylori

  • Drugs

  • Metformin

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Stomach Acid Deficit

My Vitamin B-12 Situation

At 78 I have found it a real problem to keep my vitamin B-12 at high levels. Believe me I can tell when my levels are low. Often after eating a large meal of liver my energy levels will soar; I make it a priority to have liver at least once a week. I also take a Methylcobalamin sublingual B-12 at least once every other week.

Always get your Vitamin B Complex with any individual B Vitamin

"The B vitamins are all inter-dependant. Each one affects the absorption, metabolism and excretion of the other B vitamins."   Doctor Anthony Cichoke

First of course always try to get ALL your B complex vitamins in FOOD. RAW Green leafy vegetables are IMO the best way.

Always also assure the complete B complex vitamins when you take an individual B vitamin. This is because many of the B vitamins require one or more of the other B vitamins to be utilized by your body so a shortage of any B vitamin can affect all B vitamins. I try to assure my  B complex most days together with 1600 micro grams of Folic Folic Acid and 5 mg of Biotin . This is insurance, VERY cheap insurance.

The best way to do this is a very large salad with lots of raw GREEN LEAFY vegetables

YOU are the ONLY one responsible for your life and health; others may be indirectly responsible for your death; once you realize this your life will get MUCH better and also in ways other than your health. Healthy Protocols is designed to help YOU PREVENT most disease in YOUR body. The Disease Prevention State is the beginning basis for all Disease Treatment. The information provided throughout this site should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any illness. Call 911 for all medical emergencies. A licensed integrative physician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment of any and all illnesses you can not handle yourself. You and your doctor should reach an informed consensus on diagnosis and treatment. It is incumbent on YOU to know enough about your illness to do this. Blindly following  some doctors orders will in the end sink you IMO. Links to other sites are provided for the targeted information indicated and links should not be regarded as an endorsement of all additional information that those other sites may provide although these sites are in general very good to excellent or I would not use them.
