Vitamin A Protocol

  

Don’t be afraid of Sunshine, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D or Cholesterol; learn their properties and safely and freely use these powerful health tools

  

 “Vitamin A was first discovered in 1919. By 1924, it had been broken down and separated from its natural whole food complex: "purified”.  By 1931, LaRoche - one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, even today - had succeeded in "synthesizing" vitamin A. That means they had created a purely chemical copy of a fraction of naturally occurring vitamin A. Naturally occurring vitamin A is found associated with an entire group of other components: Retinols - Retinoids - Retinal - Carotenoids - Carotenes - Fatty acids - Vitamin C - Vitamin E - Vitamin B - Vitamin D - Enzymes – Minerals. Isolated from these other factors, vitamin A is a fraction which cannot perform its biological functions. Taken as a synthetic, it must then draw on this list of resources already in the body in order to complete its make-up. Whole food vitamin A, by contrast, is already complete and ready to go. Most synthetic vitamin A consists only of retinal, retinol, or retinoic acid. The well-publicized potential for toxicity with mega doses of vitamin A involves one of these three. Vitamin A toxicity, known as hypervitaminosis, always results from an excess of synthetic, "purified" vitamin A, and never from whole food vitamin A. Without further ado, here's the kernel: ascorbic acid is not vitamin C.   Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E.   Retinoic acid is not vitamin A.   And so on through the other vitamins.   Vast sums of money have been expended to make these myths part of Conventional Wisdom.   If you have several college degrees and all this is news to you, don't feel bad. “The key is having the proper ratio of vitamin D to vitamin A in your body.  To obtain this proper D/A ratio, you must make a choice.  (1) Either obtain the D/A ratio as Nature and God intended, that is, the ratio the human genome evolved on, or (2) think you know everything, intervene in a closed system, bypass the controls in the intestine and inject active A directly into your blood by taking vitamin A or cod liver oil.  Vitamin A production is tightly controlled in the body, the source (substrate) being carotenoids from vegetables in your intestine.  The body uses these carotenoid substrates to make exactly the right amount of retinol for your body.  That is, it is a closed, tightly regulated, system, one designed to perfection by God and Nature.  When you take vitamin A as retinol, such as in cod liver oil, you intervene in this closed system and bypass the controls.  Proceed at your peril.“ Doctor John Cannell Vitamin D Council on why routine vitamin A supplements may do harm

“Take no extra vitamin A unless you have a bowel disease that impairs absorption of vegetables and transportation of carotenoids.  The paper below discusses how Americans are getting too much of a good thing.  Vitamin A is like vitamin D, it has a U shaped curve, too much or too little will harm you.  Too much is the rule, not too little, in developed countries.  Furthermore, it gives a mechanism by which excessive doses of vitamin A will impair brain development and, although I can't put my finger on the reference right now, at least one author has proposed that excessive vitamin A intake may worsen autism.  The vitamin D theory of autism would predict just that.” Doctor John Cannell Vitamin D Council, McCaffery PJ et al Too much of a good thing: retinoic acid as an endogenous regulator of neural differentiation and exogenous teratogen. "I have found supplemental doses of vitamin A are an outstanding way to reverse cellular changes on surfaces. That includes skin (outer) and intestines (inner). Now we see it helps interior cells as well (prostate). The late Dr. William Donald Kelley used potent doses of vitamin A in many of his cancer patients. Vitamin A is essential to maintain your surface cells (epithelial tissues) as physical barriers to infection. It also is closely involved in maintaining many types of immune system cells. It could save your life.”  Doctor Robert Rowen MD   Note IMO you do not want to use this retinol UNLESS you have a serious problem; this is one situation where professional help is required. OTOH this demonstrates to me the absolute importance of keeping your beta carotene, the feedstock for all the vitamin A products, fully topped up at all times.

Vitamin A is a generic term for a large number of related compounds. Retinol, retinal, retinoic acid, and related compounds are known as Retinoids. Zinc (See Zinc Protocol) is required for your body to use Retinol. Beta-carotene (See Beta Carotene Protocol) and other carotenoids (See Carotene Protocol) that can be converted by your body into retinol are referred to as provitamin A carotenoids. The very best carotene source IMO is cooked carrots (See Carrot Protocol). If you eat large amounts of cooked carrots as I do all your worries about vitamin A in all its forms are over. Your liver will store large amounts of carotene and convert it to vitamin A as your body generates the demand for vitamin A in all its forms. Neat eh?

 Some people may have trouble fully digesting carotene; fish oil (See Fish Oil Protocol) or cod liver oil (See Cod Liver Oil Protocol) can be used by them as a source of vitamin A and for help digesting their carotene. I use both cooked carrots and fish oil to be safe.

 Vitamin A is all-important in our diets, for it enables your body to use proteins and minerals, insures proper vision, enhances the immune system, enables reproduction, fights infections and helps the production of testosterone and other growth factors. Vitamin A is essential for endocrine functions and helps detoxify. Since Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin always eat sources with a little good fat. Vitamin A is denatured at temperatures above about 270 F so boiling or steaming in water is a good cooking method for any food containing carotene or vitamin A.

The Retinoids are found only in animal foods such as cod liver oil; fish and shellfish; and liver, butter and egg yolks from pasture-fed animals. Traditional diets contained ten times more vitamin A than the typical modern American diet. I think one of the reasons to eat animal flesh and animal products is we do need some direct Retinoids in our diet. Cod liver oil (See Cod Liver Oil Protocol) and cooked carrots (See Carrot Protocol) are good sources of Vitamin A.  Here are the best.

     

Preformed Vitamin A can be Toxic in LARGE amounts UNLESS you are Sick

"A short-term use of high-dose Vitamin A -- 400,000 units daily for up to one week for average 70kg adults can be useful as an anti-infective measure." Doctor Garry Gordon 

"One author has controlled for retinol intake and the pre-cancerous condition, colon adenomas. Doctor Kyungwon Oh, of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working with Harvard epidemiologists, found that high retinol intake completely thwarted the beneficial effects of vitamin D, stating, "a higher retinol intake, approximately > 4,800 IU/day, appears to counter the beneficial effect of vitamin D.  In other words, exactly what the British Medical Journal paper found with colon cancer.”    Vitamin-d-vitamin-a-and-cancer

“As the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in the United States is apparently much lower than the prevalence of subclinical vitamin A toxicity, we cannot recommend cod liver oil for either adults or children.  (We exclude fish body oil from our warning, as it contains no vitamin A  or vitamin D  but is a very important source of omega-3 fatty acids.)  For example, in a recent assessment of serum retinyl esters in a group of obese individuals, four percent had levels >10% of total retinol which usually indicates hypervitaminosis A.  Instead, a diet rich in carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, and other orange fruits and vegetables will supply all the carotenoids the body needs to make retinol without the potential for hypervitaminosis A, especially when additional preformed retinol already exists in dairy products, eggs, and fortified cereal.  We wish our diet were as rich in vitamin D.  With the exception of infants on formula or toddlers drinking large amounts of milk or fortified juice, adequate amounts of vitamin D are virtually impossible to obtain from diet."  Hathcock JN et al, Evaluation of vitamin A toxicity. "The crux of the problem is that a form of vitamin A, retinoic acid, weakly activates the vitamin D response element on the gene and perhaps blocks vitamin D's more robust activation. "It’s highly unfortunate, but many people in developed countries are potentially sabotaging the multitude of health benefits they could receive from adequate vitamin D by taking excessive amounts of vitamin A, either in the form of multi-vitamins or cod liver oil.”      Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

  

According to the authoritative Merck Manual, acute vitamin A poisoning can occur in children after taking a single dose of synthetic vitamin A in the range of 300,000 IU or a daily dosage of 60,000 IU for a few weeks. In adults only vitamin A from megavitamin tablets containing vitamin A when taken for a long time has induced acute toxicity, that is, 100,000 IU synthetic vitamin A per day taken for many months.

IMO short term courses of  up to 400,000 IU/day are fine for 150 pound adults for a few days when under infective pressure. The infection will "burn" the vitamin A.

As Doctor Cannell shows the daily intake 3,000 IU of preformed retinol can block the beneficial effects of vitamin D. We certainly do not want this. OTOH when an infection is burning off our retinol at a high rate, high daily doses of vitamin A may be just the infection fighting ticket you need for a few days to a week or so.

Use Carotene NOT Preformed Vitamin A for your Daily Vitamin A Needs

"Vitamin A is incredibly important – particularly at this time of year when we are all trying to fight off the winter colds and flu. It boosts our immune system and reduces the risk of inflammation such as that associated with chest infections. What our research shows is that many women are simply not getting enough of this vital nutrient because their bodies are not able to convert the beta-carotene."  Doctor Georg Lietz Newcastle University, Note The team found that 47 percent of the women had a genetic variation that reduced their ability to convert beta-carotene into vitamin A. For these women and MANY of us, taking preformed vitamin A when fighting infection is CRITICAL.

 IMO you should not routinely take Vitamin A supplements (See Supplement Protocol). Once in awhile a single large shot of vitamin A is beneficial. I try to get my daily Vitamin A indirectly thru the carotene in my cooked carrots, liver (See Animal Liver Protocol) and other food. At the start of the flu season a single dose of 100,000 IU of vitamin A and, days later, 100,000 IU of vitamin D3 together with, days later, some fish oil and cod liver oil may jump start your resistance. When coming down with the flu you may wish to repeat this as several experts on vitamin A and vitamin D recommend.

In view of Doctor Georg Lietz's work it appears we need to be SURE we are getting the vitamin A we need if we are unable to convert beta carotene. Eating lots of liver is one way.

IMO many of the diseases we "vaccinate" for are nothing but nutrient deficiencies. When your child's or your vitamins, minerals and nutrients are topped up any human can defeat almost all pathogens BEFORE they take hold in your body.

An important point about vitamins A, C, D and Cholesterol is that they have a maintenance state and an anti-infective state. When your body is healthy and not fighting any serious infection or inflammation the requirements for these nutrients are nominal. However when your body is fighting a serious systemic infection their requirements skyrocket. For example with vitamin A you may normally only need a few thousand IU/day but when fighting a serious infection Doctor Gary Gordon gives a 150 pound adult 400,000 IU/day. Most of this 400,000 IU will be burned rapidly fighting the infection. Likewise with vitamin C, when fighting an infection you will be able to ingest many more grams before reaching bowel tolerance, often 30 grams/day or more.
