Salmon Protocol

    

“Research indicates 3 servings of omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, sardines, cod, halibut or tuna, each week confers significant protection against sudden death from a heart attack.” University of Athens

“A study tracking 1822 men over 30 years found that those who ate the most fish, over an ounce per day, cut their risk of cardiovascular disease by over 40% and their risk of heart attack by about half.” Northwestern University Medical School

“Reducing dietary vegetable oils and increasing the omega-3 fats EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by consuming fatty fish such as cod, salmon, mackerel, and sardines can benefit individuals experiencing chronic inflammatory conditions.” Adam O et al

"This study makes it clear that if you are going to eat a diet rich in animal protein, you need to base it on healthy animal protein, the way God made it. If you eat beef, then it should be grass-fed beef or other grass-fed animals. Grass is a leafy green that has plenty of omega-3 in it that the animal can absorb. If you eat chicken, it should be organic, free-range chicken. And if you eat fish, it should be wild fish that swim with scales (no shellfish). I prefer Alaskan wild salmon. “Canned salmon offers some additional advantages as well. It is often packed in its own oil, so you can benefit from greater quantities of omega-3s. Canned salmon also includes the bones, which are safe to eat since they soften during the canning process. The result is a 3-ounce serving of salmon that has over half the calcium found in an 8-ounce glass of cow's milk. Low-salt or no-salt added varieties of canned salmon are available for those concerned about their salt intake.”   WHF

    

Wild Salmon is a great fish source of omega 3 EFA (See Omega 3 EFA) and a LOT more. I eat one or two cans a week. The canned wild salmon is a better source of omega 3 EFA than the fresh salmon or fish oil (See Fish Oil Protocol) capsules, although both of these forms of Salmon are excellent. Be sure to drink the juice and eat the skin, most of the omega 3s are in the layer of fat just below the skin and can leech into the juice. Wild Salmon is a super nutritious food bursting with essential fats, minerals, proteins and vitamin D. A can of wild salmon contains about four or five grams of omega 3 EFAs. There is copious evidence more than an adequate amount of omega 3 EFA is highly therapeutic.

   

Beware of Mislabeled Salmon

“Unfortunately, salmon are often mislabeled. According to Hartnell, studies have discovered that as much as 70 to 80 percent of the fish marked "wild" were actually farmed. This includes restaurants, where 90-95 percent of salmon is farmed, yet may be mis-listed on the menu as "wild." “The two designations you want to look for are: “Alaskan salmon,” and “sockeye salmon,” as Alaskan sockeye is not allowed to be farmed. So canned salmon labeled "Alaskan Salmon" is a good bet, and if you find sockeye salmon, it's bound to be wild. Again, you can tell sockeye salmon from other salmon by its color; its flesh is bright red opposed to pink, courtesy of its superior astaxanthin content. Farmed salmon often called “Atlantic Salmon” contains more than 10 times the PCBs and other chemicals as Wild Salmon. Farmed Salmon contains lots of omega 6 EFA and only about 15% of the vitamin D (See Vitamin D Protocol) as wild salmon. IMO eat Wild Alaska Salmon instead. Farming salmon is illegal in Alaska.
