Get to know the high ORAC foods and USE them daily

“Scientists have found that boosting your daily intake of foods with high ORAC values increases your bodies plasma and tissue antioxidant protection, guarding your body’s tissues against the onslaught of free radicals that can lead to decay and disease.”  Cao et al, American J of clinical Nutrition 1998 Nov

“The development of many chronic and degenerative diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and neuronal degeneration such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease has been theorized to be caused, in part, by oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has also been implicated in the process of aging. It is known that reactive oxygen species can damage biological molecules such as proteins, lipids, and DNA. While the human body has developed a number of systems to eliminate free radicals from the body, it is not 100% efficient (20). Diets rich in fruits, nuts, and vegetables have long been considered to be an excellent source of antioxidants. A number of minerals and vitamins have a role as dietary antioxidants in addition to their other biological functions. These include vitamin C, vitamin E and its isomers (tocopherols and tocotrienols), and selenium.” USDA

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity is a measure of the total antioxidant (See Antioxidant Protocol) power of foods. The ORAC assay is considered by some to be a preferable method of measuring antioxidant power because of its biological relevance to the in vivo antioxidant efficacy. If you get plenty of foods with high ORAC values you will be heading off LOTS of problems at the pass. Get to know the high ORAC foods at least in general.

You can use many of these foods and spices to season (See Seasoning Protocol) and add antioxidant protection to your meals and snacks while adding almost NO calories. IMO this is the way to eat. How about a nice bowl of black raspberries or blackberries as a snack (See Healthy Snack Protocol) or treat (See Healthy Treat Protocol)?

The USDA says you should get 3,000 - 5,000 ORAC units/day. IMO at least double this; 10,000 seems a nice round number to shoot for.

You will notice several things about high ORAC foods

  • Many spices have very high ORAC values. That is why they are used to preserve foods.

  • Use these spices freely to season your food INSTEAD of salt

  • Many fruits have very high ORAC values

  • Get to know the high ORAC fruits

  • Berries as a class have high ORAC values.

  • Get to know the high ORAC berries

  • The Carotenoids have high anti-oxidant values

  • Eat at least one pound of Carotenoid rich foods a week

  • Our friend Garlic stands tall as a high ORAC vegetable.

  • Raw foods generally have a higher ORAC value than the same food cooked.
