Onions are THE alternative to Garlic

 If you are not eating garlic for whatever reason you MUST eat onions.

Onion is not as potent as garlic since the sulfur compounds in onion are only about one-quarter the level found in garlic. But since you normally eat more than four times the weight of onion than garlic in a sitting it all works out just fine. I eat both garlic and Onions and most days I eat both onions and garlic often both in the same meal. Did I emphasize that enough? Note onions and garlic are powerful; it is possible to eat TOO MUCH so take care. Instead of eating large amounts, eat IMO some each day.

 Onions are rich in powerful sulfur-containing compounds that are responsible for their pungent odors and for many of their health-promoting effects. Onions are very rich in chromium, that helps cells respond to insulin, plus vitamin C, and numerous flavonoids (See Flavonoid Protocol), most notably, quercetin (See Quercetin Protocol).

IMO we all need to get a LOT of quercetin for MANY reasons; onions are a good way.

It is important to remember that vitamin C is a COMPLEX of substances. Quercetin is one of those components. This explains quercetin's many salubrious properties in relation to collagen. To fully enjoy quercetin' many benefits you MUST assure you also get ALL the other vitamin C components.

     

Onion a good Selenium Source

"Selenium-methyl L-selenocysteine is an organic complex of selenium with a sulfur-containing amino acid, in this case, L-cysteine. This compound is the most recent form of selenium to attract scientific interest. Found in plants in the Allium family (garlic and onions) grown in selenium-enriched soil, it is one of the most potent forms of selenium known.57 Laboratory studies reveal several mechanisms of action unique to this form of selenium. Perhaps most intriguingly, selenium-methyl L-selenocysteine supplements restore proteins associated with normal circadian (24-hour) rhythms.58 Disruptions in circadian rhythms are associated with development of several cancer types, most notably breast cancers.  You MUST eat either raw onion or raw garlic or better BOTH EVERY DAY. For five thousand years hundreds of human cultures all over this earth have decided garlic and onions are one of the very BEST things we can eat. I say go with the flow in this case.

 Red Onions and other strongly flavored onions are nutritionally superior onions. You want your onions raw or lightly steamed to preserve their nutrients. Onions contain sulphur a critical mineral for detoxification that many of us who do not eat a lot of meat may lack. Onions will help the saturated fats (See Saturated Fat Protocol) you eat stay liquid until fully distributed in your body.

  

Caution: Very large amounts of onions, say three or four decent sized onions a day, over a protracted time can be harmful. A day or two should be fine. But give yourself a break when eating large amounts. I usually limit my intake to one half of a decent sized red onion a day but on occasion will eat several cooked onions in a good stew. YUM!
