Vitamin K Protocol

IMO if you are not assuring you get the vitamin K you NEED you are most likely going to run into SERIOUS health problems sooner of later.

“Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium.   Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. And so on. Mineral deficiencies can cause vitamin deficiencies, and vice versa. Epidemic mineral deficiency in America is a well-documented result of systematic soil depletion. So that is the other prime difference between whole food vitamins and synthetics: whole food vitamins contain within them many essential trace minerals necessary for their synergistic operation. Synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals, relying on, and depleting, the bodies own mineral reserves.”  Doctor Tim O'Shea

“Vitamin K suppresses interleukin-6 and has been show to protect against a wide range of age related diseases.” Reddi et al

“In a study very low blood levels of vitamin K1 were found in patients who had fractures. The severity of the fracture strongly correlated with the level of circulating vitamin K.” Bitensky

“In a study of postmenopausal women the lower the blood level of vitamin K in individuals the lower their bone density.” Kanai et al

“Vitamins K and C used together have shown considerable clinical efficacy when used to treat nausea and vomiting occurring during pregnancy. In a study 91% of patients showed complete remission within 72 hours.” Merkel

“It is probable that deficiency of vitamin K, particularly that of menaquinone-7(MK-7) is one of the risk factors for osteoporosis.” Kaneki et al

“We found that bone-building compounds and the bone-forming activity of osteobalsts all increased significantly in the presence of MK-7. MK-7 may have a preventive role for bone deterioration with aging.” Yamaguchi et al

“In a study of elderly female rats MK-7 was found to prevent drops in the bone forming compounds and to inhibit the activity of bone-eroding compounds.” Tsukamoto

“MK-7 has been shown in several studies to reverse and even prevent some forms of cardiovascular disease by eliminating excess calcium in the blood. In other studies MK-7 has been shown to be effective in reversing osteoporosis. Furthermore studies indicate that MK-7 may help lower cholesterol, play a role in preventing Alzheimer’s and treat some forms of cancer. Vitamin K is a well known and powerful antioxidant.” Howard & Payne

“Vitamin K occurs naturally in one of Japan’s staple foods Natto. The Samurais daily diet included Natto because they thought it increased strength and reaction time in battle. Ancient Japanese records point out that leading medical professionals of the day insisted that pregnant women take a daily allowance of Natto to ensure healthy offspring.” Howard & Payne

“Nattokinase from the Japanese food Natto is among the most powerful natural agents in terms of fibrinolytic activity.” Doctor Hiroyuki Sumi, discoverer of Nattokinase

“Although vitamin K1 is still important for those who might have trouble maintaining normal blood-clotting functions, MK-7 is a better choice when it comes to common “old age” maladies such as bone loss or hardening of the arteries. In fact MK-7 was noted in one study to be three times more effective than vitamin K1 in improving total vitamin K status in the body.” Howard & Payne

“Vitamin K2 can bring about significant reductions in serum cholesterol, can prevent and possibly ameliorate Alzheimer’s and may be effective in addressing some forms of cancer. And recent studies indicate that vitamin K2 (and especially MK-7) is more bioavailable and effective than vitamin K1.” Howard & Payne

“In a study of 27 Japanese men aged 64 to 84 it was found that the degree of bone loss increased as the levels of vitamin D, albumin and vitamin MK-7 decreased.” Tamatani et al

“Female rats given ovariectomies and thus unprotected by hormones from bone loss were fed a diet rich in MK-4 and MK-7. It was found that MK-7 and not MK-4 prevented loss of bone.” Yamaguchi et al

“In a study tissue from male rats was cultured both with and without MK-7. It was found that bone building compounds and bone-forming activity of osteobalsts all increased significantly in the presence of MK-7.” Yamaguchi et al, 2001

“Unlike vitamin K1 which does not accumulate in the body, MK-7 has a half life of three and one half days and will build up in the blood over time, establishing higher concentrations.” Howard & Payne, Note just the thing for those with bone problems or calcified arteries

“In bones vitamin K (K1 and K2) plays a role in the production of the proteins osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein (MGP). MGP not only is a contributor to bone matrix formation but it also is a potent inhibitor of calcification of arteries and cartilage. There is in fact evidence that when vitamin K levels fall below a certain critical level MGP is not generated in sufficient quantities to prevent arterial calcification.” Howard & Payne

“Both vitamin K1 and K2 were associated with higher HDL and K2 caused a decrease in total cholesterol. Compared to those whose K2 intake was in the lowest third of the participants those whose intake was in the top third boosted a 41% reduction in CVD. Participants who had a high K2 intake had the lowest levels of calcification in their aortas, while low vitamin K intake was linked to an increased risk of death form CHD.” Ommoord Study 1990

“A hallmark of normal aging involves calcification in soft tissues throughout the body such as heart valves, glands, blood vessels, systemic calcification. As we age we lose our ability to regulate calcium balance. Vitamin K can quickly restore calcium homeostasis. Vitamin K is absolutely essential for regulating calcium balance in the body. A deficiency of vitamin K status causes brittle bones and a vascular system that hardens to a state of poor functionality.”  Life Extension, Note want to slow aging? Here it is.

“Compared with the lowest intake of vitamin K2, men with the highest vitamin K2 dietary consumption showed a 63% reduced incidence of advanced prostate cancer.” Nimptsch et al EPIC-Heidelberg 2008

“The synergistic effect of vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 in preventing osteoporosis has been shown in clinical trials.” Hirao et al

“Drugs like Coumadin that antagonize vitamin K do more than cause bone loss and arterial calcification. In a model of melanoma in mice, the oral administration of anticoagulant drugs that antagonize vitamin K drastically promoted metastasis.” Life Extension

“By preventing pathological tissue calcification vitamin K may confer anti-aging effects throughout the body. Higher vitamin K intake has been associated with reduced all-cause mortality.” Life Extension

"Increased intakes of vitamin K2, but not K1, were associated with a 35% reduction in prostate cancer risk. The potential benefits of K2 were more pronounced for advanced prostate cancer." Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention 18(1):49-56, 2009, Note IMO this vastly understates the effect of K2 on prostate cancer; according to the study the effect appears to be dose dependent; the more K2 the lower the risk

"Leafy green vegetables such as kale, collard greens, bok choy, parsley, mustard greens and escarole are good sources of calcium, magnesium and vitamin K."  Doctor Eric Braverman MD

"One study says that natural vitamin K2 reduced arterial calcifications by 50%. And it also reduced cardiovascular mortality risk by the same amount. The dose they used in this study was only 45 mcg. That's a tiny dose. Personally, I think 100 mcg is the optimum dose. So try to take this much every day. The best food source of this vitamin is natto."  Doctor Robert Rowen MD

"A new analysis says that current recommendations for vitamin K are not being met, placing people at increased risk of age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease. The analysis of data from hundreds of published articles dating back to the 1970s, conducted by Joyce McCann, PhD and Bruce Ames, PhD from Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, also suggests that current recommendations for vitamin K intake need to be increased to ensure optimal health. Current recommendations are based on levels to ensure adequate blood coagulation, but failing to ensure long-term optimal levels of the vitamin may accelerate bone fragility, arterial and kidney calcification, cardiovascular disease and possibly cancer.”  Swanson Vitamins, Note once again we see the RDA being foisted on us is targeted at a single low level requirement while MANY other high level requirements are ignored

Another study, published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, found vitamin K can literally kill off leukemia, pancreatic and ovarian cancer cells. It does this by programming the cells to “self destruct.”

"Vitamin K2 is an amazing vitamin has been proven to stop cancer in its tracks. A study in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology found this vitamin can kill off leukemia, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer cells."   Doctor Al Sears MD

There are three different types of vitamin K:

  • K1, found in plants

  • K2, found in animal sources is also made by bacteria in your intestine.

  • K3 is synthetic and is generally regarded as toxic because it generates free radicals.  K3 is being used as a drug in high risk conditions.

Synthetic vitamins are NOT Complete Vitamins

“This will be a short chapter, but after you're finished with it, you will know more about vitamins than 95% of clinical nutritionists, doctors, supplement sales force, or bodybuilders. If that sounds arrogant or overstated, it really isn't my fault. I'm just a messenger; a purveyor of information. Either I'm right or the 95% are right; can't be both. Without further ado, here's the kernel: ascorbic acid is not vitamin C. Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E.   Retinoic acid is not vitamin A. And so on through the other vitamins. Vast sums of money have been expended to make these myths part of Conventional Wisdom. If you have several college degrees and all this is news to you, don't feel bad. Unless you think your education ended at Commencement.”  Doctor Tim O'Shea

Sources of Vitamin K

"How many people have adequate vitamin K… care to guess? Just about zero. Most people get just enough K from their diets to maintain adequate blood clotting, but NOT enough to offer protection against he following health problems—and the list is growing: Arterial Calcification, Osteoporosis, Brain Problems, Dementia, CVD, Cancer et al."   Doctor Vermeer

"Doctor Vermeer makes the point that vitamin K will never be able to do its work alone. It needs collaborators—and vitamin D is an important one. There is a synergistic effect between vitamins D and K. These two agents work together to increase MGP, or Matrix GLA Protein, which is the protein responsible for protecting your blood vessels from calcification. In fact, MGP is so important that it can be used as a laboratory measure of your vascular and cardiac status.”     Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"Those following certain vegetarian diets may not be getting enough vitamin K2 thus exposing themselves to significant [Soft Tissue] calcification risk even though they assume they are eating healthy."   Life Extension, Note if you are eating vegetarian NATTO is about your only way to get vitamin K2

“Most cheeses are rich in vitamin K2… particularly, curd cheese. And even though it’s not as high in vitamin K2 as natto, curd cheese may be more palatable on a day-to-day basis for many people. Raw curd cheese made from grass fed cows would be best. Curd cheese is also a good vitamin K2 source because it’s lower in fat (animal fat) than regular cheese. When compared to natto in equal portions… Japanese food natto contains over 27 times more vitamin K2 than curd cheese.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

Green leafy vegetables, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli are good sources of vitamin K1. Eat a little butter or other good fat (See Fat Protocol) with your vegetables to absorb the fat-soluble vitamin K. Good digestion (See Digestion Protocol) and probiotic care encourages your intestines to manufacture vitamin K2. Antibiotic drugs (See Antibiotics Protocol) and chlorinated water wipe out your intestinal flora, which are the source of the vitamin K2 made by your body. Butter, cheese, liver, eggs and Natto (See Natto Protocol) contain vitamin K2. Natto especially is a super source of vitamin K2. IMO have a few ounces of natto at least once or twice a week. I eat all the sources of vitamin K1 and K2 often.

Plants rich in Vitamin K1

"Green Leafy vegetables are the highest in Vitamin K1."

Vitamin K2 Sources

Most of our Vitamin K is the K2 manufactured in our intestines

“Vitamin K engages in a delicate dance with vitamin D; whereas vitamin D provides improved bone development by helping you absorb calcium, there is new evidence that vitamin K2 directs the calcium to your skeleton, while preventing it from being deposited where you don't want it -- i.e., your organs, joint spaces, and arteries. A large part of arterial plaque consists of calcium deposits (atherosclerosis), hence the term "hardening of the arteries. Vitamin K2 activates a protein hormone called osteocalcin, produced by osteoblasts, which is needed to bind calcium into the matrix of your bone. Osteocalcin also appears to help prevent calcium from depositing into your arteries. In other words, without the help of vitamin K2, the calcium that your vitamin D so effectively lets in might be working AGAINST you -- by building up your coronary arteries rather than your bones.”   Why Might Vitamin K2 be so Beneficial for Your Heart?

Although vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin, unlike other fat-soluble vitamins it does not accumulate in your body and its stores are rapidly depleted without regular dietary intake or its production in our intestine. Most of our Vitamin K is the K2 manufactured in our intestines, so we need to protect and encourage these good bacteria (See Probiotics Protocol). K2 specifically keeps calcium and phosphorus out of the arteries and other soft tissues, and may help reverse the effects of heart-unfriendly diets. Vitamin K is not toxic in high doses. Vitamin K is an anti-inflammatory (See Inflammation Protocol) and strongly antioxidant. Vitamin K protects against many forms of arthritis..

Vascular Calcification

"Autopsy reports show that 75% - 95% of men and women suffer some degree of vascular calcification; vascular calcification may be prevented by correcting a vitamin K deficiency."   Life Extension

"We know vitamin K is essential for MGP-carboxylation which in turn shields heart valves and arteries from pathological calcification. We also know that vascular calcification is an active and therefore preventable process if vitamin K intake is increased."   Life Extension, Note please visit our vitamin K protocol to learn how to bring your vitamin K levels up

"Homocysteine is a prime culprit that causes the initial endothelial injury that leads to atherosclerosis. What conventional doctors fail to acknowledge today is homocysteine' role in initiating damage to the vascular system."   Life Extension, Note if you have a good level of vitamin C and other collagen producing substances' in your blood infrequent damage will be repaired.

Vitamin K is absolutely essential to prevent the calcification of your vascular system. You MUST assure enough vitamin K to do this very important job. Cutting back on your calcium intake will NOT prevent the calcification of your tissues; only vitamin K can help do it.

Vitamin K is Strongly Anti-CANCER

Another study, published in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, found vitamin K can literally kill off leukemia, pancreatic and ovarian cancer cells. It does this by programming the cells to “self destruct.”

"Vitamin K2 is an amazing vitamin has been proven to stop cancer in its tracks. A study in the Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology found this vitamin can kill off leukemia, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer cells."   Doctor Al Sears MD

Drugs like Coumadin that antagonize vitamin K do more than cause bone loss and arterial calcification. In a model of melanoma in mice, the oral administration of anticoagulant drugs that antagonize vitamin K drastically promoted cancer metastasis.”  Life Extension, Note does your doc tell you this when he puts you on this toxin? Does he even know?

“Compared with the lowest intake of vitamin K2, men with the highest vitamin K2 dietary consumption showed a 63% reduced incidence of advanced prostate cancer.” Nimptsch et al EPIC-Heidelberg 2008

"Increased intakes of vitamin K2, but not K1, were associated with a 35% reduction in prostate cancer risk. The potential benefits of K2 were more pronounced for advanced prostate cancer." Furthermore studies indicate that MK-7 may help lower cholesterol, play a role in preventing Alzheimer’s and treat some forms of cancer. Vitamin K is a well known and powerful antioxidant.” Howard & Payne

"Vitamin K's promise in managing a variety of advanced solid tumors has been established in vitro and in animal studies."   Life Extension

"Long associated only with blood clotting vitamin K is now known to have effects on tissues throughout the body, including most of the steps leading to cancer. Recent discoveries about vitamin K illustrate the tremendous breath of its targets, spanning virtually every phase in cancer's deadly progress. A solid base of laboratory science is complemented by compelling clinical evidence that vitamin K can prevent and in some cases treat, a variety of common and dangerous cancers."   Life Extension

Vitamin K has been found to be beneficial in the fight against the following cancers: liver, colon, stomach, nasopharynx, lung, leukemia and oral cancer. Vitamin K suppresses inflammation, which helps fight many diseases.

IMO if you are not assuring you get the vitamin K you NEED you are most likely going to run into SERIOUS health problems sooner of later.

Benefits of Vitamin K

“Vitamin K occurs naturally in one of Japan’s staple foods Natto. The Samurais daily diet included Natto because they thought it increased strength and reaction time in battle. Vitamin K Deficiency is often Undetected

"Scientists have uncovered a deficiency of vitamin K as being a factor that enables calcium to infiltrate the inner lining of arteries to cause arterial calcification."   Life Extension

Please be aware that unless you are aware of vitamin K and its various forms, sources and antagonists there is a good chance you will be deficient often, probably ALWAYS. This is not a good situation. IMO do the work to make sure you have all the vitamin K you require. Maintaining a good level of vitamin K, especially K2 as we grow older is a MUST for those of us who wish to remain active physically and NOT “retire” to a wheelchair in front of a propaganda box once we hit 70 or so. Calcification of each of your 100 trillion individual cells is what in the end slows you down. Vitamin K2, magnesium and a few other goodies can help keep this from happening.
