Testosterone Protocol

As we age BOTH Men and Women need to pay attention to their testosterone

“Testosterone delivered through a transdermal patch increased women’s perceptions of orgasmic pleasure.”    Braunstein 1999

“Studies have shown that supplementing with 30mg of Zinc and 450mg of magnesium per day can elevate testosterone levels up to 30%.”  Doctor Lorrie Brilla Western Washington University

“A human study comparing the dietary intakes of 155 pairs of male twins found a correlation between testosterone levels and vitamin A intake.” Bishop, et al

“There are many testosterone- receptor sites in the heart.” Bricout et al

“Low testosterone correlates with depression and other psychological disorders.” Moger

“In men low testosterone is associated with high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides and HBP.  Administration of testosterone dilates blood vessels.” Channer et al

“The aphrodisiac effect was monitored by the act of yawning and stretching because yawning, either alone or associated with stretching, is considered an ancestral vestige surviving throughout evolution that promotes sexual arousal. The results showed that 800 mg/kg of E. longifolia Jack increased yawning by 50% and stretching by 16.7% in sexually sluggish old male rats, by 676-719% and 31-336%, respectively, in sexually active male rats, and by 22-44% and 75-100%, respectively, in middle aged, 9 months old and retired breeders. We conclude that the results of this study support the folk use of this plant as an aphrodisiac.” Ang HH, Lee KL, Kiyoshi M , Note Long Jack has been shown to increase testosterone up to 300%

“Low testosterone is an independent risk factor for developing aggressive coronary artery disease.” Philips et al

“Men with higher testosterone levels live longer and have lower rates of diabetes and heart disease.” Life Extension

“The consequences of testosterone deficiency are likely to impact on a men’s’ quality of life including sexual function, energy levels, body composition, mood and cognitive function.” Maggi et al

“Botanical agents such as maca, muira puama, chrysin, nettle, ginger and Norway spruce lignans can help alleviate many of the health complaints associated with male aging such as fatigue, low libido, poor memory and prostate enlargement. These botanicals may work in part by enhancing free testosterone levels while blocking the conversion of testosterone into estrogen. It is possible to slow or reverse changes associated with the age-associated decline in circulating free testosterone while counteracting aging-related increases in estrogen levels, thus enhancing overall vitality and health”  Life Extension

“Doctor Abraham Morgentaler has demonstrated that testosterone replacement therapy does NOT increase one’s risk for prostate cancer. Doctor Morgentaler shows increased risk of prostate cancer from low testosterone.”    Life Extension

“After age 60 hip fracture rates in men increase dramatically, doubling every ten years.” Doctor Ronald Klatz, Note 40 - 60 is where testosterone and other health bio-markers begin usually plunge in humans. All humans need to be aware of these bio-markers and WORK to get them UP as best as we are able.

“Vigorous exercise on a routine basis has proven to maintain free circulating testosterone in the body.” Doctor Ronald Klatz

“An easy way for men with normal levels of testosterone to ensure proper testosterone levels in the body is by exercising.” Doctor Adrian Dobs

“Low testosterone is an independent risk factor for developing aggressive coronary artery disease.” Philips et al 2004

“An estimated 1.2 million osteoporotic fractures occur annually and more than half occur in the vertebrae. The incidence of osteoporosis is directly correlated to testosterone production in men and estrogen and progesterone production in women.” Doctor Ross Hauser, Note Estrogen production depends on testosterone production in both women and men. Pregnenolone is the only hormone that acts as a precursor for progesterone in the steroid pathway.

"With the cessation of 80% of hormonal production, a peri-menopausal woman suffers from estrogen, progesterone and testosterone deficiency. The replacement of estrogen alone does not correct an absent sex drive, loss of muscle tone and general lack of mental get-up-and-go." Doctor Edward Lichten, MD, PC, Note women must assure the testosterone and Pregnenolone feed stocks to assure good hormone production

"Testosterone is recognized as the hormone of desire: it makes muscles for boys and turns them into sexually functional men. But testosterone is very important to a woman, too. She produces increased amounts of this hormone in her puberty, because testosterone is the precursor to estrogen. Without testosterone, there would be no "woman."  Doctor Edward Lichten, MD, PC

"Aging males can suffer the dual consequence of declining testosterone production while the testosterone they do produce is often excessively converted into estrogen." Life Extension

"Aging men are plagued with declining testosterone levels while their estrogen remains the same or even increases. This imbalance often sets the stage for a host of chronic inflammatory disorders while increasing the amount of abdominal adiposity." Life Extension

"A new report proves that Tribulus terrestris can get your engines revved up… better than any other product designed to heighten male performance. German researchers working on a natural enhancement supplement gave it to 50 lucky men. They found it stoked the fires of their desire far better than the pharmaceutical products you've heard so much about. The men also said that once they took this safe botanical they had “better sex afterwards, more fun in bed and just generally felt better about themselves. Tribulus boosts performance and heightens desire. In fact it ratchets up your manliness across the board—something those prescription performance drugs can’t do. That’s because Tribulus raises your levels of “vitamin T”—testosterone."  Doctor Al Sears MD

"Keeping your testosterone levels high leads to lasting sexual pleasure. Testosterone lies behind male excitement, virility, and potency. If you don’t have enough, today’s drugs will do nothing to solve the problem." Doctor Al Sears MD, Note this applies to women also

"Doctor Wehr and colleagues, at the Medical University of Graz in Austria, just published a surprising study showing that testosterone levels are directly associated with vitamin D levels and testosterone levels vary with the seasons, in concert with vitamin D levels. Furthermore, the men with very low testosterone levels had very low vitamin D levels. This study does not prove, like any association study, that vitamin D increases testosterone levels. It may be that sun-exposure in the summer is responsible for both higher vitamin D levels and higher testosterone levels."   Doctor John Cannell MD

"By increasing both scavenger receptor B1 and hepatic lipase activities, testosterone facilitates an increase in reverse transport (HDL), a process that removes excess cholesterol from the tissues and carries it to the liver for processing and disposal."   Life Extension

"In a large study published in 2015, men treated with testosterone had a 24% reduction in heart attack risk and a 36% reduction in risk of stroke.13 The most exciting revelation about this new study was that the risk of dying from any cause was 56% lower in treated men whose testosterone blood levels normalized, compared with untreated individuals. With a wealth of studies showing positive benefits, and in the face of the FDA’s irrational decision based on flawed studies, it is time to review the good science on this issue, and to make balanced recommendations about testosterone replacement therapy. ... There is no convincing evidence of increased cardiovascular risks with testosterone therapy. On the contrary, there appears to be a strong beneficial relationship between normal testosterone and cardiovascular health that has not yet been widely appreciated.”32"   Why the FDA Is Wrong about Testosterone   Note LE says if you must use bioidentical testosterone treatment, this may be wise BUT try EVERYTHING else FIRST IMO. Testosterone replacement is a HIGHLY medical monitoring continuum.  It is definitely not for me but I will use it if nothing else will do the job, Perhaps in my 90s LOL. Lucky for me my lifestyle includes MOST of the testosterone boosting elements found in this protocol. There is a HINT here.

Testosterone is a Man’s best friend, a Woman's very good friend

"One of the fastest-growing areas in medicine today is the use of testosterone in men, particularly during the middle years. Most of my academic credentials within medicine come from my work with testosterone, as I was one of the first to recognize that healthy men can experience an age-related natural decline in hormones that affects their sexuality and vitality, and which can be treated successfully with testosterone therapy. Although testosterone has been used since the 1930s, it was a small backwater in medicine until the last 20 years or so. I feel as if I were there at its modern-era birth and have taken a degree of uncertain pride as I’ve watched the field expand. Although I’ve published many articles on the benefits of testosterone, my greatest contribution has been to show that the long-held belief that testosterone is risky for prostate cancer is false. As the fear of testosterone has declined, physicians have become more comfortable with it, leading to a crescendo of interest in its use."   Male Menopause

Aging is accompanied by an imbalance of hormones required to sustain life. As a man's testosterone declines, his risk of dying greatly increases.7-9 Heart disease,10-13 osteoporosis,14,15 and muscle wasting16,17 are strongly linked to testosterone deficiency, as are chronic inflammatory18-20 and neurodegenerative disorders.21-25 Doctors often surprised to learn that men with low testosterone show an increased incidence of prostate cancer.26-30  Life Extension on Testosterone

"Low testosterone levels can lead to low energy, sleepiness, irritability and depression (of course it's quite natural to be depressed and irritable if you can't perform in the bedroom!). It can ruin your mental focus and turn you into a weakling.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

“When testosterone levels decrease, fatigue can also set in from the breakdown of muscle tissue and poor energy production. It adds, "You also see an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and other age-related illness that occur as testosterone levels slowly decline with age. Lower testosterone levels are associated with increased obesity, diabetes, fatigue, lower cognitive abilities, depression and heart disease."   How Boosting Testosterone Levels Can Improve Your Body

"Aging is accompanied by an imbalance of hormones required to sustain life. As a man’s testosterone declines, his risk of dying greatly increases.7-9 Heart disease ,10-13 osteoporosis,14,15 and muscle wasting16,17 are strongly linked to testosterone deficiency, as are chronic inflammatory18-20 and neurodegenerative disorders.21-25 Doctors are often surprised to learn that men with low testosterone show an increased incidence of prostate cancer.26-30  Long before life prematurely ends, testosterone deficit can manifest in the form of psychological disturbances such as depression,23,31,32 reduced sexual desire,33-35 and a loss of sense of well-being.32,36 "   Balanced Testosterone and Estrogen

"Along with age, blood pressure, antihypertensive treatment, diabetes, and total and HDL cholesterol, gender has long been considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Males experience their first cardiovascular event up to 10 years earlier than women and overall life expectancy in men is approximately five to eight years shorter than that of females. The Framingham Heart Study found that “hard” CVD death rates for males was 18.3% and 7.6% in women. "   Cardiovascular Disease In Men And Women — Does Declining Testosterone Play A Role?

“In men low testosterone is associated with high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides and HBP.  Administration of testosterone dilates blood vessels.” Channer et al

You need to keep your testosterone high. Women need a little testosterone too. Testosterone is the feed stock for a female's (and a male's) estrogen. It has often been found a little testosterone will boost a woman’s libido immensely, among many other functions both men and women require. Testosterone acts as an aphrodisiac hormone in brain (See Brain Protection Protocol) and as an anabolic hormone in the development of bone and skeletal muscle.

As people age, testosterone becomes bound to serum globulin and is not available to the cell receptor sites; the unbound testosterone is known as “Free Testosterone”. Almost all of the testosterone in your body is “bound” to proteins. Only about 2% of testosterone is free “bio-available.” Free testosterone is required for many sexual and other functions.

When getting tested (See Medical Testing Protocol) for your testosterone levels be sure to get a test for FREE (See Avena Sativa Protocol) Testosterone in addition to any other Testosterone level tests.

Low Testosterone levels increase your risk for many and serious problems including muscle, mental, sex drive and immunity loss, osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, depression and obesity.

I approach this testosterone issue by doing as many things SHOWN to improve testosterone levels as I am able while realizing it is possible to over do anything. You will note MANY testosterone building actions, for example exercise, are good for many other body functions.

Age-related decline in Testosterone levels is the Norm

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2010/images/jun2010AWSI_04_big.jpg

Low Testosterone Blood Levels in Male Life Extension Members , Note IMO this drop is nothing we cannot USUALLY deal with, with NATURAL means. For an age related physiological decline this is not that bad. Of course for the guy and his wife above THEY have a big problem.

Life Extension on Low Testosterone

In men aged 30 years and older, testosterone levels steadily fall at a rate of about 1% per year.1,2

Researchers at the National Institute on Aging3 have established low testosterone levels in:

  • 20% of men over age 60
  • 30% of men over age 70
  • 50% of men over age 80

These percentages understate the magnitude of this problem as they fail to consider the majority of aging men who fail to achieve optimal testosterone and estrogen balance.

"As testosterone levels decline in men, their risk of dying markedly increases. Heart disease, osteoporosis and muscle wasting are strongly linked to testosterone deficiency as are chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. Mainstream medicine's ignorance regarding the need to maintain free testosterone in the higher ranges is a significant cause of premature disability and death in aging men."   William Faloon

"Millions of men needlessly suffer form low sex drive, loss of energy and diminished enthusiasm for life because of low levels of the male hormone testosterone."   Life Extension

"Optimal sex hormone status including a healthy balance of testosterone and estrogen, is a core component of any anti-aging strategy."   Life Extension

"Testosterone which is critical for a robust body and sexual function in both sexes, is lowered by higher insulin."   Doctor Robert Rowen

Low testosterone, at ANY age, is NOT inevitable. You must work to avoid this however. Aging men can convert testosterone to Estrogen, Estrogen Dominance. The problem of excess Estrogen must be addressed by both men and women or all the free testosterone in your blood will do you less good. A low Testosterone level may be indicated by low sexual desire in both men and women. A low sperm volume in men may indicate low testosterone.

Testosterone for Women

"Testosterone is recognized as the hormone of desire: it makes muscles for boys and turns them into sexually functional men. But testosterone is very important to a woman, too. She produces increased amounts of this hormone in her puberty, because testosterone is the precursor to estrogen. Without testosterone, there would be no "woman."  Doctor Edward Lichten, MD, PC

Researchers gave supplemental testosterone to women between the ages of 31 and 56 who had undergone a hysterectomy. Hysterectomies lower circulating levels of testosterone. After 12 weeks, the women receiving testosterone showed significant improvement in mood, sexual function and overall well being. At the Jean Hailes Foundation in Australia – a non-profit research institution dedicated women’s health issues – Doctor Susan Davis found that testosterone is essential in maintaining a woman’s sex drive, energy level and sense of well being – regardless of her age.

Testosterone is made in part from Good Fats

A Good Fat Chile for Testosterone Building

If you add some carrots it will supply vitamin A; olive oil will add a monosaturated fat, beets too will help build testosterone. Onions, garlic and many other spices will help (see list below).

These guys like soy which we KNOW is a no, no. So trust but VERIFY. I do like the idea of a STEW or Chile which includes many testosterone building ingredients. This idea can work for MANY other health problems you may have or as a Prophylactic health practice for key health concerns.

DHEA and Testosterone

“DHEA is the most abundant of all steroids and is released from the adrenal glands. DHEA is involved in the manufacturing of testosterone, estrogen, progesterone and corticosteroids. The decline of DHEA parallels that of growth hormone. By age 65, the body makes only 10-20% of DHEA that was made at age 20. It has been shown in animal studies to act as an agent of anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-autoimmune disease, anti-stress, anti-infectious disease. In other words, it is an all around anti-aging drug. It may also boost the function of the brain as the brain tissue contains 6 times more DHEA than any other tissue in the body.”  Doctor Michael Lam MD

“The incidence of osteoporosis is directly correlated to testosterone production in men and estrogen and progesterone production in women.”  Doctor Ross Hauser MD   Note DHEA is a feedstock for both testosterone and progesterone

Your body manufactures Testosterone from DHEA, Cholesterol and saturated Fat. Saturated fat and monosaturated fat seem to increase testosterone production while polyunsaturated fats seem to lower testosterone production. A big culprit here is the perfectly awful Omega 6 polyunsaturated commercial oils we are ingesting in massive amounts.

Abundant animal research indicates the importance of vitamin A to the production of testosterone. Transfats can decrease testosterone, often drastically.

Vitamin D and Testosterone

The simple primal act of getting LOTS of the high noon sun on your bare “unprotected” skin in large amounts just may be the most important single thing you can do for your health. If the sun casts a shadow longer than you are tall you cannot make adequate vitamin D from the sun. You MUST take vitamin D3 at the daily rate of about 1000 IU/20 pounds of body weight.

This may be a blockbuster. IMO it is a good bet to ASSUME getting your vitamin D levels up, especially through use of the sun, will improve your testosterone levels.

Exercise and Testosterone

"Exercise is shown to maximize our declining levels of hormones as we age including the all important testosterone and growth hormone and to minimize insulin a serious aging hormone."   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

“Vigorous exercise on a routine basis has proven to maintain free circulating testosterone in the body.” Doctor Ronald Klatz

“Most telling of ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties were the biochemical findings. Compared to the placebo recipients, men taking ashwagandha experienced greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage, greater decrease in body fat percentage, and a whopping 4.3-fold increase in testosterone levels. These studies are a powerful demonstration of ashwagandha’s ability to relieve the physiological effects of physical stress.“   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

“An easy way for men with normal levels of testosterone to ensure proper testosterone levels in the body is by exercising.” Doctor Adrian Dobs

Once again EXERCISE, especially VIGOROUS exercise is shown to be very beneficial to your body and mind. We are LUCKY exercise does so much to improve our lives. This makes things ever so SIMPLE from an organizational standpoint. LOL! EVERY DAY one or two hours how difficult is this to understand?

HGH is Testosterone Boosting

"Exercise is shown to maximize our declining levels of hormones as we age including the all important testosterone and growth hormone and to minimize insulin a serious aging hormone."   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

You can help boost your testosterone with my HGH enhancing mixture of amino acids. Please do not fail to do this for MANY reasons.

Cholesterol and Testosterone

“In men low testosterone is associated with high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides and HBP.  Administration of testosterone dilates blood vessels.” Channer et al

"By increasing both scavenger receptor B1 and hepatic lipase activities, testosterone facilitates an increase in reverse transport (HDL), a process that removes excess cholesterol from the tissues and carries it to the liver for processing and disposal."   Life Extension

"A critically important role of testosterone is to enable HDL to remove excess cholesterol from the arterial wall and transport it to the liver for disposal. This effect of enhancing HDL is termed “reverse cholesterol transport” and is vital to preventing arterial occlusion.9,10"   Life Extension

Here we see a little of how testosterone and cholesterol interrelate. Cholesterol is an irreplaceable feed stock for testosterone production. Low testosterone is associated with an unhealthy cholesterol profile (high LDL, low HDL)

Beets and Testosterone

"Beets may indeed have aphrodisiac properties. They are rich in the element boron, which until recently was only known for its bone building properties. In 1987, a small scale human study uncovered another effect; boron "markedly elevates" the production of testosterone in both men and women. Higher testosterone levels are linked with greater sexual desire in both sexes. Eating beets also relaxes and widens blood vessels, allowing greater blood flow throughout the body. Beets show promise of being a veggie Viagra."   Jo Robinson Eating On The Wild Side

Yet another HUGE benefit of beets. Make sure you include this SUPERFOOD in your diet.

Testosterone Boosting Supplements

Men seek testosterone quick fix, with risks

"One testosterone-boosting herb (and quite likely the most recognized and marketed in Canada) is puncture vine (tribulus terrestris). Used for years by numerous European Olympic athletes, this herb has demonstrated its effectiveness in extensive clinical research. One particular study has shown that free-form testosterone (responsible for increased muscle and strength) levels in healthy men could be increased by 30 per cent or more, within just five days."   Free Your Testosterone

"Saw palmetto extract has active constituents which helps prevent the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the ineffective compound that is responsible for hair loss, acne and other undesirable side-effects of steroid use. In a nutshell, less DHT testosterone in the body means available testosterone can have more beneficial effects without side effects. In addition, saw palmetto actually has anti-estrogenic effect."   Free Your Testosterone

"European research reveals that an extract of nettle root (Urtica dioica) increases the availability of free-form testosterone. A study which combined nettle root with oat straw extract (Avena sativa) showed that testosterone levels of men and women participating in the experiment increased by an average of 105 percent. Numerous studies confirm that this combination also leads to an increase of aerobic power and muscle strength."   Free Your Testosterone

"Pumpkin seed extract (Cucurbita pepo) is another resource to prevent testosterone from becoming “deactivated.” As a natural source of zinc, pumpkin seed extract also helps to optimize the production of testosterone."   Free Your Testosterone

“So how are Avena Sativa and testosterone related? Limited research also shows that the oats could provide some properties to enhance or boost the hormone levels. Similar to how other natural herbal supplements work in relation to testosterone – such as Tribulus terrestris – this herbal active ingredient is thought to increase the luteinizing hormones in the body. These hormones, which are released by the pituitary gland, send a message to the testicles to create more testosterone. The active ingredient in the herb also encourages bound testosterone to free itself, providing an increase to energy levels and sexual health – benefits related to the body when it is experiencing optimal testosterone levels.”   Is Avena Sativa a Testosterone Booster That ACTUALLY Works?

“Most telling of ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties were the biochemical findings. Compared to the placebo recipients, men taking ashwagandha experienced greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage, greater decrease in body fat percentage, and a whopping 4.3-fold increase in testosterone levels. These studies are a powerful demonstration of ashwagandha’s ability to relieve the physiological effects of physical stress.“   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

Tongkat Ali (See Tongkat Ali Protocol) alone will boost most people’s testosterone as will to a lesser extent tribulus (See Tribulus Protocol). In any case if you cannot get your testosterone levels up to acceptable levels please see an integrative doctor. Low Testosterone levels is a serious problem.

Drugs are NOT the Answer

"In this population of older men with limitations in mobility and a high prevalence of chronic disease, the application of a testosterone gel was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular adverse events. The small size of the trial and the unique population prevent broader inferences from being made about the safety of testosterone therapy."    Adverse Events Associated with Testosterone Administration

"I do see an increase in guys who are fatter. The question is whether, if you lose 15 or 20 pounds, your testosterone would revert [to normal]. We know that even 15 pounds makes a huge difference to their level. Most of these guys actually have 50 pounds to lose."    Doctor Kathleen L. Wyne MD PhD, Note get lean and your T goes up. get T naturally and you get lean

“Studies have shown that supplementing with 30mg of Zinc and 450mg of magnesium per day can elevate testosterone levels up to 30%.”    Doctor Lorrie Brilla Western Washington University

“Vigorous exercise on a routine basis has proven to maintain free circulating testosterone in the body.” Doctor Ronald Klatz

“An easy way for men with normal levels of testosterone to ensure proper testosterone levels in the body is by exercising.” Doctor Adrian Dobs

First try getting down to weight. This alone works for many. Women and men are being prescribed into a drug form of testosterone. IMO Stay away from drugs or the hormone itself to boost your testosterone; you want to encourage your own body to produce more of its OWN free Testosterone . There are so many ways to build your free testosterone naturally most people can do it without drugs. If you do take the hormone itself make sure it is the BIO-IDENTICAL form of testosterone.

One of Big Medicine Incorporated greatest crimes is the foisting of non bio-identical hormones on we the people.

Testosterone plays a vital role in many functions throughout the body note this is for both sexes

“Testosterone is more than a ‘male sex hormone.’ It is an important contributor to the robust metabolic functioning of multiple bodily systems.”   Doctor Jerald Bain MD

"Exercise is shown to maximize our declining levels of hormones as we age including the all important testosterone and growth hormone and to minimize insulin a serious aging hormone."   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

"Men with increasing levels of testosterone had a decreased prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and body fat mass. Compared to men with the highest testosterone levels, those with low testosterone were twice as likely to have a history of cardiovascular disease. It was also observed that men with the highest testosterone levels were the most physically active.17"   Life Extension

"Since testosterone levels decline with age, some have argued this means the decline should be considered a normal part of aging and therefore should not be treated. It’s an argument that we hear elsewhere: Why do we have to medicalize normal aging? My response is simple. Normal aging stinks. Aging is associated with bad eyesight, bad hearing, bad teeth, bad joints, bad blood vessels, bad hearts, and cancer. We treat all of these in order to improve our lives and, in some cases, our longevity. Just because a condition becomes common as we age doesn’t mean we should resign ourselves to it if treatment is helpful and safe."    Male Menopause

Symptoms Of Low Testosterone
Symptoms Of Low Testosterone

Substantial quality-of-life improvements occur in most men who properly restore their testosterone to youthful ranges. Common symptoms in men with low testosterone are:

  • Sexual problems such as decreased desire, erectile dysfunction, difficulty achieving orgasm, and reduced intensity of orgasm
  • Low energy and increased fatigue
  • Loss of motivation
  • Depressed mood
  • Loss of sense of well-being and vigor

When low testosterone is corrected, men report improvements in some or all of the above symptoms. It is interesting to note that these symptoms of low testosterone are analogous to what one would expect with normal aging.
