"In the Journal of Neuroscience, Oregon Health and Science University researchers report a brain benefit for the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in rhesus macaques.* The study is the first to utilize functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to observe the interaction of multiple brain networks in live monkeys. The research involved rhesus macaques between the ages of 17 and 19 who had been given life-long diets that were low or high in DHA. Damien Fair, PA-C, PhD, and his colleagues found stronger connectivity of early visual pathways in the brains of monkeys given high-DHA diets as well as increased connections within brain networks similar to those found in humans, including those related to cognition and higher-level processing."   Primate Brains Show Omega-3 Benefit

“After controlling for factors like age, sex and lifestyle, the researchers found that, on average, adults with the highest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids lived 2.2 years longer. Higher levels of fatty acids were most strongly associated with decreased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. ... The omega-3 fatty acid index, which is the sum of red blood cell EPA and DHA, was significantly lower in heart attack patients compared with controls, while total trans-fatty acids were significantly higher. Those whose omega-3 fatty acid index was among the top third of participants had a 92 percent lower risk of heart attack than those whose levels were in the lowest third. For those whose total trans-fatty acids were in the top third, the risk of heart attack was 72.67 percent higher than subjects in the lowest third.  The authors note that omega-3 fatty acids are associated with decreased blood viscosity, and have anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-arrhythmic, lipid lowering and vasodilatory effects. Conversely, trans-fatty acids have been associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.”

"Harvard University researchers looked at 12 dietary, lifestyle and metabolic risk factors such as tobacco smoking and high blood pressure and used a mathematical model to determine how many fatalities could have been prevented if better practices had been observed. Omega 3 EFAs are Required for Life

"Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco reveal in the January 20, 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that heart disease patients who have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids experience a lower rate of reduction in telomere length over time. Telomeres, which are protective DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes, shorten with the age of the cell, and their length is is a marker of a marker of biological aging.”     Higher omega-3 fatty acid levels correlated with reduced telomere shortening rate, Note here is stunning proof of the VITAL nature of the omega EFAs for life itself. Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids are required for life. Your body cannot make omega 3 EFA. If you do not eat enough Omega 3 EFA your body will be forced to use an inferior oil for these key uses. This will result in inferior body parts and functions and serious problems, cancer for one, down the road.

 

Omega 3 EFAs exists in three forms

New research shows many people can efficiently convert ALA to the required EFAs EPA and DHA (See DHA and EPA Protocol). However enzyme (See Enzymes Protocol) deficiencies are usually present in the people of Inuit, Scandinavian, Northern European, and seacoast ancestry. They lack the ability to convert ALA into EPA and DHA, two omega-3 fatty acids intimately involved in the function of the brain (See Brain Protection Protocol) and the immune, and nervous systems. IMO we all need to get cold-water fish or fish oil supplements in our diet to assure our DHA and EPA.

Recent statistics indicate that over 90% of people in the United States do not eat enough omega 3 fatty acids. Now since the omega 3 EFAs are ESSENTIAL, your body cannot make them, for life what is this saying about our health and way of eating? You do not need much omega 3 EFA about ten to twenty grams a day and you need not get it every day, just average it. I often throw a whole can of wild salmon in a salad. A can of wild salmon contains about four or five grams of omega 3 EFAs. There is copious evidence more than an adequate amount of omega 3 EFA can be highly therapeutic.

There are very few good sources of Omega 3 EFAs. This is why there is a strong possibility, almost a certainty, that YOU are not currently getting enough of the absolutely critical Omega 3 EFAs. You MUST learn these few sources and WORK to include them in your diet. It is not easy but it is essential that you provide your body with this essential fat. When I was a boy almost all beef was loaded with omega 3 EFA. If you feed a steer on grass he will produce meat with lots of omega 3 EFA. All wild animals that eat their natural wild food contain omega 3 EFA. Take that same steer or salmon and feed him grain and you get MUCH less omega 3 EFA, about ten times less. What you get is more omega 6 EFA (See Omega 6 EFA Protocol).
