Leg/Muscle Cramps Protocol

“When a person is deficient in minerals, particularly trace minerals, he does not retain enough of the liquids he drinks--instead of hydrating the body, water is quickly eliminated via the kidneys. This is another reason the body retains feces in the bowel, in order to extract as much water as possible.” Martin J. Lara, author of “Salt Deficiency: The Cause of All Serious Diseases”   Note this shows minerals play a KEY role in leg cramps

     

MOST of the time the Primary Cause of Leg/Muscle Cramps is DEHYDERATION

Muscles are normally 76% water if your muscles are 74% water they will tell you by cramping up. All your muscles will cramp up; it just seems your legs will often cramp up first. All it takes is two quarts of good clean water and ALL muscle cramps will Usually go away.

Everything from low back pain to migraines, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, muscular pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, angina, high blood cholesterol, allergies, asthma and cramps in the legs due to a build up of chemical residues and insufficient blood supply.” Doctor Batmanghelidjs MD, author of “Your Body's Many Cries For Water”

 

“Water is the most important nutrient for ensuring optimal bodily functions. It is also the most overlooked.  Without exception, every function of the body is tied to an optimum flow of water.  A well-hydrated cell is a healthy cell. A healthy cell lives longer.  Maintaining well-hydrated cells is what forms the foundation of a comprehensive anti-aging program. To put it simply, your body needs a minimum of 8 glasses of pure water a day in order to maintain basic functionality.  An intake of 12 to 15 glasses is recommended for optimum anti-aging health.  Drink any less, and you are already in a state of dehydration from an anti-aging perspective.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

Collagen, Protein, Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Vitamin E and H2O Required

I have noticed most of the times my legs cramp up; a quart or three of water was all I needed to reclaim my normal leg function. When I get leg cramps I immediately drink a quart of water while I try to figure out why the leg cramps; usually by the time I figure it out the cramps are gone.

I often get leg cramps on the first day of a winter hike because I do not hydrate enough on the hike in; freezing water. Drink plenty of water with dinner and take a quart of water in your sleeping bag to warm it up. Your legs may wake you up to drink it warm or cold.

I NEVER get leg cramps in the heat of august when I am drinking gallons of cool water UNLESS I am low on salt or magnesium or have not, for some reason, drunk enough water.

     

Magnesium and Calcium

Excess Calcium and Muscle Cramps

Excess calcium in your lungs can cause or exacerbate muscle cramps. Please make sure you understand how you can prevent excess calcium in your body and REMOVE any excess calcium you may have in your muscles or anywhere else in your body.

"It is important to have adequate magnesium intake and most Americans do not. A number of people have written about muscle cramps after they start sunbathing or taking Vitamin D. This is likely caused from the neuromuscular hyperexcitability of magnesium deficiency that is somehow unmasked by higher Vitamin D levels. All the enzymes that metabolize Vitamin D require Mg. It is also required in each of the steps concerned with replication, transcription, and translation of genetic information, and thus it is also needed for the genetic mechanism of action of Vitamin D.”  Doctor John Cannell MD   Abbott LG, Rude RK. "Of all the electrolytes magnesium is one of the most important because it helps the others do their jobs. People who are depleted of magnesium tend to have greater irritability of the muscles and nerves. This irritability may cause muscle cramping."   Doctor Robert McLean MD

Both calcium and magnesium are required in your body in about equal amounts or you may experience “restless leg”, “muscle cramps” and “twitching muscles” which may wake you from a sound sleep.  I try to make sure my magnesium is topped up especially if I have any cramps. When I cannot sleep it is often a sign of water or magnesium deficiency.

“Over 35% of fertile menstruating females are anemic and have symptoms of fatigue, pale skin, leg cramps in bed and cold hands and feet.”  Bill Sardi

Muscles require a few basic tools; if  you do not supply them your muscles will tell you. I NEVER get leg cramps hiking in the heat of august when I am drinking gallons of cool water UNLESS I am low on salt or magnesium or walking uphill in shoes with no heels.

Once on a summer hike I got severe stomach cramps. It so happened I was trying to achieve a low salt condition. I found it amazing how quickly the cramps went away when I licked some salt off my hand.
