Iodine Protocol

Could iodine be a breast cancer cure?

     

“Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. "Iodine intake immediately increases the excretion of bromide, fluoride,  and some heavy metals including mercury and lead. Bromide and fluoride are not removed by any other chelator or detoxifying technique."    Iodine and Chelation  , Note iodine should also chelate/displace chlorine

"Doctor Kenezy Gyula Korhaz states that iodine chelates heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminum and halogens such as fluoride and bromide, thus decreasing their iodine inhibiting effects[vii] especially of the halogens. Iodine has the highest atomic weight of all the common halogens (126.9). Iodine is the only option when it comes to removing these toxic haloids from the thyroid and even the pineal gland where fluoride concentrates, especially when there is a deficiency in iodine in the body. "Athletes and people engaged in heavy physical effort lose iodine and other trace elements through perspiration. One study demonstrated iodine deficiency in 25% of vegetarians and 80% of vegans."   Life Extension, Note this is based on the woefully inadequate 150 mcg/day iodine RDA. IMO based on a more reasonable RDA of 10 or so milligrams almost All of us are deficient  

No where is displacement toxicity more evident than in the case of the halides, which are all antagonistic elements to iodine, meaning they will impede the absorption of iodine. Heavy metals get stored in the same receptors that are looking for iodine.  Almost all of us are exposed to bromine and fluorine and are storing these toxic halides in our iodine deficient receptors. The mechanism of iodine in the cells is very ancient and lacking of specificity, in fact, cells are not able to distinguish iodide from other anions of similar atomic or molecular size, which may act as “pseudo-iodides”: bromide, fluoride, chlorine, thiocyanate, cyanate, nitrate, pertechnate, perchlorate.[v].”   Iodine and Chelation

“The relatively low prevalence of multiple sclerosis in Japan, despite its temperate latitude, has puzzled many researchers. We know though that their soils have some of the world’s highest known levels of iodine caused by the use of seaweed as a fertilizer. Deficiencies of this essential trace element appear to be associated with many diseases, or birth defects, including goiter, cretinism, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and cancer of the thyroid and nervous system. Although the evidence is weaker, iodine deficiency may also be implicated in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. It should be obvious to physicians that mineral deficiencies are at the center of chronic diseases, which can be largely avoided if appropriate replenishment is stressed. People with MS may also have low levels of selenium or of glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme produced from selenium. A theory explaining the pathogenesis of MS concerns an increased stickiness of cellular plasma membranes, hampering normal vascular function of the brain. In agreement with that theory researchers have found significantly lowered selenium values and lowered glutathione peroxidase activities.[6]”   MS: Magnesium, Selenium, Iodine and Mercury Connection

Iodine is Essential

"Ironically, insufficient iodine intake primarily affects the most health-conscious: people who avoid iodized salt, processed foods, and meat. People who exercise vigorously can be among the most iodine-deficient, since substantial quantities of iodine are lost in sweat.9 Iodine replacement is easy. There are a number of iodine supplements that provide various forms of iodine. Choices include molecular iodine (often as drops) and kelp tablets (dried seaweed). While the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for iodine is 150 mcg for non-pregnant adults, some data suggest that human need for ideal health may be greater, perhaps even approaching the experience of the Japanese, who ingest milligram doses (more than 1,000 micrograms).10 In my clinic, we prescribe 500-1000 mcg (0.5-1.0 mg) of iodine per day from kelp tablets with success."    Avoiding Frailty Note this 1 milligram of iodine is also insufficient IMO

Iodine is a non-metallic  (See Alfalfa Protocol) element is required to assimilate minerals from your food. Iodine is essential. It’s responsible for the production of every hormone in your body. Iodate is the natural form of iodine found in food.

Humans for the synthesis of thyroid (See Thyroid Protection Protocol) hormones require iodine. Thyroid enlargement, or goiter, is one of the earliest and most visible signs of iodine deficiency.  A thyroid not properly functioning can bring on many serious problems. Most of us IMO are getting far too little iodine.

Iodine acts as a bactericide externally, many think it may function thusly internally also. Most of your Iodine is stored in your thyroid gland. IMO as we age many of us lose our ability to store Iodine and must ingest some Iodine every day. This applies to me for one.

Iodine is used by enzymes in your body to produce iodine-charged free radicals that deactivate yeasts. Before the advent of anti-fungal drugs, iodine was the standard medical treatment for yeasts; IMO iodine is usually a much preferred treatment today.

Mothers (See Pregnancy Protection Protocol) to be need to assure their fetus of an adequate amount of iodine; up to 36% are deficient as measured by the deficient RDA. Up to 80% of vegans are deficient in iodine. Anyone who sweats a lot is likely to be deficient as sweating uses a lot of iodine.

  

Most, almost ALL of us are Deficient in Iodine

"Dr. Abrahams thinks that the correct quantity of iodine needed to maintain sufficient amounts of iodine in the body is 13 mg. daily. This is 100 times more than the government recognized RDA for iodine.”    Doctor James Howenstine, MD

"Since iodine is needed for the production of thyroid hormone, and the body does not make iodine, we have to get through what we eat. It is commonly found in foods such as saltwater fish, seaweed, sea vegetables, shellfish, bread, cheese, and iodine-containing multivitamins. Iodized salt is now the main source of iodine in the American diet, but only about 20 percent of the salt America eats contains the micronutrient. Increasingly popular "designer" table salts, such as sea salts and Kosher salts, usually do not have much iodine. However, the majority of salt intake in the United States comes from processed foods, and food manufacturers almost always use non-iodized salt in processed foods."   Don't Overlook Your Thyroid

Most of us IMO are getting far too little iodine. We often get 1% or less than optimal iodine. IMO assume you are deficient in iodine; learn how to correct this deficiency and correct it.

      

Iodine has been Driven out of our Food Supply

"Iodine therapy helps the body eliminate fluoride, bromine, lead, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum and mercury. Could this substitution of bromine for iodine have been carried out to increase diseases and thus create more need for pharmaceutical drugs?"  Note you have NO idea how good it makes me feel to hear a mainstream doctor voice the obvious

"There is growing evidence that Americans would have better health and a lower incidence of cancer and fibrocystic disease of the breast if they consumed more iodine. A decrease in iodine intake coupled with an increased consumption of competing halogens, fluoride and bromide, has created an epidemic of iodine deficiency in America."    Doctor Donald Miller, Jr

Much of the iodine has been removed from our food. The non-nutritive iodine displacing halogens fluoride, bromide, chlorine, nitrate and others and  have been introduced into our water and food. Why?

I have had a hypothyroid problem for most of my life. If I do not take my daily kelp (See Kelp Protocol) tablets, a good source of iodine, I will get cold signaling me to take my kelp. I also take large amounts of iodine 5mg - 10mg of Lugol's iodine solution many days.

  

Thyroid Nutrients

Selenium (See Selenium Protocol), tyrosine (See L-Tyrosine Protocol), vitamin A (See Vitamin A Protocol) and iron (See Iron Protocol) are required along with Iodine to enable your thyroid to function well. You want to get at least 5 or so mg of natural Iodate from food per day.  If you are eating unrefined sea salt, no dairy or seafood as I often do, you are almost certainly NOT getting enough iodate. Seaweed is an excellent way to get lots of Iodate. Don’t be afraid of too much Iodate from food, the Japanese eat LOTS of seaweed, many receive 15 mg iodate/day, and have few problems with iodine. I try to have a dish of seaweed every week. IMO if you are severely hypothyroid or suspect you may be you want to eat a few ounces of seaweed a day. IMO seaweed is the way to go for ingesting large amounts of iodine!

 

Doctor James Howenstine, MD on Iodine

I thank my lucky stars for running into this insightful Doctor's cogent observations on the super critical  iodine.

"Iodine has a role in promoting general well being as well as protecting against infections, degenerative diseases and cancer. Iodine promotes the normal killing of defective and abnormal cells (apoptosis). Thus, iodine helps the body's surveillance system to detect and remove abnormal cells. Additionally, the presence of iodine triggers differentiation away from the more dangerous undifferentiated type of cell toward normal cells. The presence of adequate levels of iodine in the body (Japanese diet with lots of sea vegetables and fish) reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS). in the body which decreases the oxidative burden in the body. This results in slowing of degeneration disease processes and decreasing the risk of cancer.”  

"The mammary glands have a trapping system for iodine similar to that of the thyroid gland. The breasts effectively compete with the thyroid gland for ingested iodine. This distribution of iodine to both breast and thyroid gland in pubertal girls explains why goiter is 6 times more common in girls than pubertal boys. The disappearance of iodine into breast tissue in women leads to decreased ability to supply the thyroid gland with an adequate amount of iodine. The development of a goiter in young girls indicates deficient distribution of iodine to both breast and thyroid tissue. Treating such a patient with thyroid hormone is not sensible and appears to increase the risk of breast cancer."   Note women you MUST solve this problem yourself, the average doc jumps right to the thyroid meds. IMO get at least 14 mg of iodine/day at least for two or so weeks then make sure you are getting at least 5 - 10mg/day mostly from seaweed

Iodine can help protect your body from radiation poisoning. Iodine does not give complete protection but everything you can do helps.  Iodine 131 a radioactive decay product from a bomb, nuke power plant or even possibly sprayed on us will be readily absorbed by your body UNLESS your body is saturated with iodine.

Iodine is widely distributed in your body; your thyroid is often mentioned but women's' breasts and men's prostate, as well as other locations in your body compete very well for the available iodine.

Since at least 99% of us lack even good levels of iodine we are at high risk to any radioactive iodine that may find its way into our air, food and drink.
