Gelatin and Collagen Hydrolysate Protocol

“[Gelatin is a] Great source of dietary collagen (side note: collagen is too large to be absorbed by the skin, so those skin creams are pretty useless… get it internally and use coconut oil for lotion!). He further states: Although Clive McKay's studies of life extension through caloric restriction were done in the 1930s, only a few studies have been done to find out which nutrients' restriction contributes most to extending the life span. Restricting toxic heavy metals, without restricting calories, produces about the same life-extending effect as caloric restriction. Restricting only tryptophan, or only cysteine, produces a greater extension of the life span than achieved in most of the studies of caloric restriction. How great would be the life-span extension if both tryptophan and cysteine were restricted at the same time?”   Gelatin Is Blowing My Mind   Note Good discussion of collagen, gelatin and related topics. Some of the ideas expressed are a little off IMO BUT this is well worth reading; your knowledge should enable you to spot the “off”. Especially intriguing are the “life extension” ideas. As you might guess at 80 years of age “life extension” is a daily topic for me. LOL

I ran into gelatin when I was searching for a way to assure/increase my collagen generating capacity. The more I looked into it the more convinced I became that gelatin could become a very useful food/supplement to be used prophylactically or as treatment for any condition which may benefit from better collagen production. This is indeed a vast number of conditions, as collagen is the prime building block for most tissue in your body.  A good source of gelatin is Bone Soup.

       

What is the Difference between Gelatin and Collagen Hydrolysate?

Gelatin: The collagen is sent to a votator, chilled and solidified, pumped onto a drying belt, and is now considered gelatin. It is dried to under 12% moisture, milled to a granular specification and packaged.

Collagen hydrolysate: The collagen is stored in a holding tank at a higher temperature to reduce the molecular weight cleaving the amino acid bonds. This process is called hydrolysis. At the appropriate time it is then introduced to the spray dryer whereas the product is made into a dry powder. The hydrolysis process described renders the gelatin powder more easily digestible and appropriate for those with digestive weakness and sensitivity. I find this type of gelatin best used as a protein powder with careful dosing (see Important Note below).

Collagen vs Collagen Hydrolysate

Both forms of gelatin seem to be very useful; I use about equal amounts of both. For problems like building collagen, tendons, connective tissues and intra-joint material within a joint I would trust the Collagen Hydrolysate to do a better job.
