Fasting Protocol

The lack of food apparently triggers a survival mechanism that helped humans endure times of food scarcity. Mankind has developed for millions of years by OFTEN going without food or with very little for many weeks at a time. Every winter many of our ancestors did not get enough to eat and had to rely on fat stored the previous year to survive thru the LONG winter months. It seems so far away to us but talk to some of the old European people about obtaining food in WWII. Your body is designed to go many weeks without food. Food was OFTEN hard to obtain in our developmental years and most years mankind was FORCED to fast for a day, a few days or even a week or two. Many of our body processes have developed to rely on this fasting IMO. For example there are numerous anti-cancer characteristics of fasting.

Your dog will not eat when sick why? The digestion of food takes a lot of energy, energy that can be directed to healing your body.

  

Fasting

Within 24 hours of food restriction digestive enzymes (See Digestive Enzymes Protocol) stop entering your stomach and instead other enzymes (See Enzymes Protocol) are released into your intestines and blood stream where they digest the waste materials of daily living.

IMO periodic fasting is very healthy. Fasting forces your body to burn the cellular and extra cellular debris we take so many steps to get rid of. I always fast when traveling or when sick. I sometimes semi-fast while hiking (See Hiking Protocol). You should be in good shape before fasting as fasting does place a strain on your body. You do not want to fast if you are diabetic, pre-diabetic or have any serious health condition. This is just another reason to get in shape; your in shape body can perform rigorous acts that further strengthen it.

  

A little Research is required

If you try it please research fasting first. You may want help with your first few fasts of over a single day or two. Many people start with a “Juice Fast” instead of a “Water Fast”. Fast for a single day to start and go from there. Your body will produce a lot of free radicals during a fast so be sure to take lots of antioxidants. I take some type of antioxidant about every four hours while on a fast.  As your fat is burned some toxins contained in the fat will be released; it’s a good idea to have a little fiber in your gut to absorb these toxins. I take a small amount of insoluble fiber each day on a fast.

During a fast your body can only convert fat to energy at a limited rate so you cannot exercise  vigorously. If you do you will “Hit the energy Wall” very quickly and feel awful. A young person discovers how an old person feels on a fast. After a fast of over ten to twenty or so days your body may start to break down muscle for energy so it’s a good idea to stay under that limit. I shoot for two weeks or less. You will know when your body starts to convert muscle to energy because your appetite will return; you will feel hunger pangs in your stomach. After the second day of a fast you should not feel physical hunger pangs if you do break the fast immediately. You will feel “mental hunger”. The idea of going without food in the midst of plenty of food is quite strange and very good for your discipline.

When I fast my vision slowly deteriorates, by the fifth or so day of the fast I can barely read. After my fast about five to ten pounds of cooked carrots (See Carrot Protocol) brings my vision back to normal. This happens every time I fast and I fast at least twice a year. Now what does this demonstrate?

My mind slows down and I become very calm and focused while fasting. I do often have a very mild headache (See Feverfew Protocol). This tells me to take some antioxidants and feverfew which will clear the headache. Fasting is a great time for your stretching exercises (See Stretching Exercises Protocol) done in a slow manner. Once while driving across the country I met an overweight (See Overweight Protocol) preacher who was complaining about the lack of good food while on the road. I told him I was on a fast and had been having several “Spiritual” experiences every day. The look on his face was priceless. As it happened we were in the desert.

  

Start Your Fasting Slowly

“During fasting, the release of toxins is common. This is especially so if you are overloaded with toxins or have a long history of exposure to fat-soluble toxins such as pesticides. Stored toxins in the cells are released into our system during fasting. For example, the pesticide DDT has been shown to be mobilized during a fast and may reach blood levels toxic to the nervous system. You may actually feel worse before feeling better. The best way to proceed is to start slow with a three-day vegetable juice fast. Longer fasts require strict medical supervision while the shorter fast can usually be conducted at home. It is essential to consult a physician especially if you have medical conditions such as diabetes that may be worsened during a fast.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

Start with one day juice fasts and work up from there. IMO after you have done a dozen of so fasts of one, two or at most three days and have informed yourself on fasting you should be able to go longer safely. During a longer fast if anything out of the ordinary happens, anything you have not experienced on shorter fasts, simply break the fast. I have broken several fasts intended to be longer due to these unexpected health signs. Be safe rather than sorry.

I also end a fast when I no longer lose the 1 to 2 pounds/day of my average fasting weight loss. You may be out of fat and may start to burn muscle which I do not wish to do.

    

A One Day Fast or a One Meal Fast is Helpful IMO

"Lebedow proved that severely malnourished and starving animals died more quickly on a diet rich in protein without fat or high in fats without protein than when given no food at all."   William Fischer

Simply missing a single meal or a day of meals is very salubrious IMO. If you look for the opportunities you can do this often. When I go out for a day of exercise I will eat a very large breakfast with lots of fat which will provide energy all day and not pack a lunch. If you are out with friends and they decide to eat at a fast food joint or a restaurant you do not trust you can always order an inexpensive dish and rearrange the food on your plate without eating any of it and focus your “meal” on conversation and friendship. An all day drive is a great time to miss a few meals. My father often used to remark when viewing an overweight person. “He doesn’t miss too many meals.” Food is essential but poor quality or known bad “food” is better missed than eaten IMO.

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Fasting has got to help your body repel cancer IMO.

I have many reasons to believe this.

  • Fasting is proven to be antiangiogenic, it prevents new cancer infrastructure

  • Fasting favors cell self destruction (Apoptosis) of flawed and precancerous cells

  • Fasting concentrates your bodies’ energy on healing itself

  • Fasting removes detritus from your body

  • Fasting denies glucose to cancer cells   This may not destroy the cancer cells but it will weaken them in a manner that does not kill your healthy cells. When coupled with actions that WILL destroy your cancerous cells it can be an advantage.

In any case should I ever get cancer you can bet I will be going on some three week and longer fasts. I do not fast much beyond two weeks now for fear of muscle destruction; cancer would give me a valid reason to go on some really long fasts.

    

The Science of Calorie Restriction

"To stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle, caloric restriction will henceforth be referred to as "caloric restriction with optimal nutrition" or CRON. Practicing CRON means decreasing caloric intake by 30 percent to 40 percent while following the principles of a healthy diet and greatly limiting the consumption of calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods such as white flour and refined sugar. It is also important that additional vitamins and minerals be added to any caloric restriction program to supply any missing nutrients. A sizable body of science is exploring the considerable benefits of calorie restriction. There can be no question but that your immune response is at least doubled when you fast. Cancer prevention and treatment also appears to be unquestionably improved. Add CVD prevention and what more could ask for?

      

A Summer Solstice Hike

Fasting or calorie reduction while hiking in a warm sunny place can be especially healthful. Your toxins are drained by fasting, large amounts of water and untold lungfuls of good air as the sun  floods your cleansed body with vitamin D and other salubrious things. I try to do this every year around the summer solstice.
