Cherry Protocol

Tart Cherries are a MUST HAVE supplement IMO. Take one every day and eat tart cherries when you get the chance.

“True story: there was a man who had such severe gout, his doctor told him he’d need surgery to remove three toes. They were stiff, bent up, and crippled from the pain of gout, caused by excess uric acid. Before his scheduled surgery, a friend told him the secret to ridding gout was Montmorency tart cherries - the kind used for cherry pie. It figures, my least favorite food, he thought. So he did what he could stomach: he sat down with a spoon and made himself eat cherry pie filling from a can! In only a few days his pain faded, his toes worked again, and he cancelled his surgery. He saved his feet, medical bills, and countless hours of physical therapy. Amazingly, this mighty fruit even in processed, sugary canned form saved his feet.”    Study: Tart Cherry Juice Amazing for Joints, Gout and Inflammation

"With so many beneficial activities, it’s no wonder that tart cherries have been shown to have a superior ability1 to protect against the full range of conditions associated with oxidative stress-induced inflammation—including cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease.6-9"   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

"Studies have shown melatonin can provide many potential health benefits that would be important to people as they age, including helping to protect the vascular system and improving sleep. Cherries are one of the few known, researched sources of melatonin. As people look for natural ways to promote longevity, including cherries in their daily diet may be helpful." Russel J. Reiter, Ph.D, nutrition researcher University of Texas Health Science Center

"Cherry juice provides quick and easy relief for arthritis and gout."   John Heinerman, Note this applies to both RA and OA

"Cherries are one of the better sources of vitamin E."   Prevention

"Tart cherries relieved pain after exercise among both healthy runners and patients with fibromyalgia."    2009 Annual Meeting of Sports Medicine

"Cherries are a natural cleansing agent to help flush poisons from the system by stimulating activity in the kidneys, bladder, and colon where most discharge of wastes takes place."   John Heinerman

“Researchers found that drinking 8 ounces of tart cherry juice in the morning and evening for two weeks significantly reduced the severity of study participants' insomnia.”   Journal of Medicinal Food, Note cherries melatonin may account for this

“Cherries have already been established as a major player in eliminating pain associated with gout I recommend 32 ounces of cherry juice (with no sugar added) at the first sign of a gout attack.”   Doctor Jonathan Wright MD

"Both sweet and tart varieties of cherry have exhibited potent cardiovascular and antidiabetic effects. Traditionally associated with the soothing of arthritis and gout, cherries have been found to block inflammatory pathways associated with these diseases;93-95 and a 2012 study found cherry intake reduced gout attacks by 35%.96 These berries and their extract also inhibit the inflammatory processes involved in heart disease.94,95,97"   Uncovering the Broad-Spectrum Protection of Anthocyanins

"All cherries provide substantial quantities of antioxidants and other nutrients. But compared to their sweet cousins, tart cherries provide: Less sugar and fewer calories than sweet cherries. Much higher content of various anthocyanins.5,31  Twice the level of various phenolic compounds and greater levels of other nutrients.31 Compounds that increase the activity of a superior range of anthocyanins and other phytonutrients.4Powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects when compared to other foods.1 A superior range of anthocyanins and other phytonutrients.4 "   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

The Abject SHAME that is the FDA

“The same potent effects that tart cherry compounds deliver to muscles similarly protect the entire body against an array of inflammation-associated pathologies. Unique compounds in tart cherries have been shown to substantially decrease the risk of osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and eurodegenerative diseases. Tart cherry standardized anthocyanin extract has now been added to some multi-nutrient formulas and is also available as a standalone dietary supplement.”    Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

"On October 17, 2005, the FDA sent out warning letters to cherry growers insisting that they cease making substantiated health claims that specific chemicals found in cherries could reduce pain and inflammation.1,2 The FDA wanted cherry growers to stop citing published scientific studies showing that cherries are packed with unique anthocyanins and other compounds that naturally mediate the inflammatory process.3-6 These compounds deliver comparable anti-inflammatory activity to ibuprofen (Advil®) and naproxen (Aleve®)7but without the significant side effects! "   Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

“What can’t cherry suppliers tell you? Simply this: tart cherries may well be the ultimate super food. Due to their superior phenolic matrix, tart cherry compounds help reduce the risk of osteoarthritis, gout, obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. And Life Extension® will continue to report the latest scientific findings about tart cherries and their potent health benefits!”   Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

Folks how much longer do we put up with these criminals?

Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

"When they tested a variety of fruits for six specific anthocyanins (including cyanidin and peonidin), they found that apples contained one, strawberries contained two, and grapes contained three—but only tart cherries contained all six key anthocyanins.4 When they further tested these and other anthocyanin-rich fruits for three key flavonols (such as quercetin and kaempferol), once again, tart cherries were the only fruits found to contain all three flavonols.4 Similarly, when they tested several anthocyanin-rich fruits for nine other potent natural compounds including polyphenols, tart cherries were the only fruit shown to contain all nine.4 "   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

“In the recent years many studies on anthocyanins have revealed their strong antioxidant activity and their possible use as chemotherapeutics. The finding that sour cherries (Prunus cerasus L) (also called tart cherries) contain high levels of anthocyanins that possess strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties has attracted much attention to this species. Here we report the preliminary results of the induction of anthocyanin biosynthesis in sour cherry callus cell cultures. The evaluation and characterization of the in vitro produced pigments are compared to those of the anthocyanins found in vivo in fruits of several sour cherry cultivars. ... In an anti-inflammatory assay, cyanidin (the aglycon of the main tart cherry anthocyanins) showed better anti-inflammatory activity than aspirin [5]. ... The callus cultures we selected are capable of producing 20-fold less anthocyanin than the fruit of the same field-grown cultivar.”   Sour Cherry (Prunus cerasus L) Anthocyanins as Ingredients for Functional Foods

"In summary, all processed tart cherry products possessed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, but processing differentially affected phytochemical content and in vitro bioactivity. On a per serving basis, juice concentrate was superior to other tart cherry products”   Processed tart cherry products--comparative phytochemical content, in vitro antioxidant capacity and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity.

Tart Cherrie's comprehensive phytonutrient profile

Cherries are Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Arthritis

"Cherries are a natural cleansing agent to help flush poisons from the system by stimulating activity in the kidneys, bladder, and colon where most discharge of wastes takes place."   John Heinerman

"20 tart cherries contain 25 mg of anthocyanins, enough to block the COX-2 enzymes that make arthritic joints hurt, while reducing inflammation the same way that NSAID drugs do.”    Michigan State University

“At Baylor University, scientists conducted a small study testing the effect of cherry extract on people with arthritis. Five out of six participants experienced significant relief, without side effects. After a mere three months, at least one participant claimed her pain had completely disappeared. Once she stopped the cherry extract, her pain returned, which is why she’s now drinking 100% unsweetened cherry juice and enjoying fresh cherries every chance she gets.”

“The consumption of about 20 cherries reduced inflammation in a manner similar to that of aspirin or the "cox-2" inhibiting drugs, without the side effects of gastric bleeding or vitamin depletion associated with these drugs.”   Journal of Natural Products 1999

"One of nature’s most potent classes of flavonoids is anthocyanins. These powerhouse nutrients are responsible for the deep colors in some berries, fruits, and vegetables. Naturally, like other anthocyanin-rich foods, tart cherries deliver substantial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. But tart cherries are superior because they provide high levels of some novel anthocyanins that are absent from a number of other anthocyanin-rich foods, such as blueberries or bilberries! Also, the unique composition of tart cherries goes far beyond anthocyanins. In fact, tart cherries were shown to contain much higher amounts of total phenolics than even their nutritious cousins, sweet cherries. Aside from a greater abundance of anthocyanins, tart cherries also deliver a cast of supporting compounds."   Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

"One of the most commonly used osteoarthritis pain medications38—acetaminophen—does not effectively lower inflammation,39 and its adverse effects can include liver or kidney damage.40  Tart cherries, however, have been shown to safely protect against the devastating pain and dysfunction of osteoarthritis by targeting the underlying inflammation.41-43 "   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

Cherries are a delicious fruit treat that provide MANY health benefits. Unsweetened concentrated Cherry juice seems to have a blood and organ cleansing property that is often helpful for problems like arthritis and all manner of skin problems. Many  people find eating a pound or two of cherries seems to provide almost instant relief from arthritis and other pains. I like to always have a pint or two of concentrated unsweetened cherry juice around to nip on for various reasons. Since I have both arthritis and gout, well controlled with foods mind you, I find cherries a constant companion.

Gout, Arthritis and Cherries

“Others have a three fold problem. They have gout and or arthritis and cannot sleep. Cherries, specifically tart or Montmorency cherries, can soothe away all three problems. They contain about the highest amount of disease-fighting antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, vitamins and minerals, ellagic acid, limonene and perillyl alcohol. They also contain some melatonin that encourages relaxation. One blogger wrote that she was finally able to sleep the night through after just a couple days taking the concentrate. Her arthritis was lessened allowing her to sleep even better.”   Mighty Power Of Tart Cherries – Goodbye Gout & Pain

"Fortunately for gout sufferers, cherries have been shown to safely and naturally prevent the underlying factors involved in gout.50,51 Researchers first proposed cherries as a gout inhibitor in 1950. A preliminary study showed daily cherry consumption relieved gout attacks and reduced serum uric acid levels.52 Since then, several studies have further established this defense.50,51 "   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

Cherries May Help Reduce Risk of Gout Attacks

We have known for generations that cherries have a very beneficial effect on gout and arthritis. the scientific basis for this is becoming available. In cherry season I freeze many gallons of fresh tart cherries for winter eating.

Muscle Protection and Tart Cherries

"The anti-inflammatory effects of tart cherries prompted investigations into their potential to lower muscle pain, protect muscle strength, and accelerate muscle repair. This is especially important for aging individuals who experience loss of muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia)."    Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

"After 24 hours, the control group’s arm strength was decreased by 30%—while the tart cherry group’s arm strength was diminished by only 12%. After four days, the control group’s arm strength was still down by over 10% while, remarkably, the tart cherry group’s arm strength had increased by 6%!34  The research team concluded that tart cherry significantly reduced the typical pain and loss of strength induced by exercise—and produced marked preservation of muscle function."   Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

"Tart cherries relieved pain after exercise among both healthy runners and patients with fibromyalgia."    2009 Annual Meeting of Sports Medicine

"Runners drank two 355 milliliter beverages containing either tart cherry juice or a placebo beverage daily for one week prior to the race and during the race. (Two 355 mL bottles of tart cherry juice daily provides at least 80 mg anthocyanins which is the equivalent of 90 to 100 cherries.) Both groups reported pain after the race. But the runners who drank tart cherry juice experienced a substantially smaller pain increase after the race. This natural protection against acute muscle soreness suggested that tart cherries must be providing some defense against muscle damage. To confirm this, scientists conducted a controlled trial on indices of muscle recovery. Participants were given either tart cherry juice or a control drink for five days before, on the day of, and for two days after a marathon race. Runners in the tart cherry group had significantly lower inflammation biomarkers (Interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein) compared to the placebo group. The tart cherry group also recovered isometric strength faster than the control runners, demonstrating an accelerated recovery following strenuous exercise."   Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Tart Cherry

"A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that short-term supplementation with powdered cherries boosted athletic performance in test subjects.* Researchers were curious to determine whether use of a tart cherry supplement prior to and following strenuous endurance exercise would affect markers of oxidative stress, muscle damage, inflammation, and muscle soreness. In a double-blind study, eighteen men and nine women, all endurance-trained runners or triathletes, were randomly assigned to ingest capsules containing 480 mg of either a placebo or the powdered cherries and then asked to complete a half-marathon run. Fasting blood samples and quadriceps muscle-soreness ratings were taken before the run and later at one, 24 and 48 hours post-run. Subjects who took the cherry powder averaged 13% faster half-marathon finish times compared to the placebo group. They also had inflammatory markers that were 47% lower. Additionally, the cherry group’s post-run muscle pain faded faster compared to the placebo group."   Tart Cherry Supplementation Benefits Athletic Performance

Vitamin B17, Amygdalin in Cherry Pits

Amygdalin, often referred to as vitamin B17, is found in usually small amounts in over 1000 foods including cherry pits  as well as apricot, peach, plum and prune pits and apple seeds. Wild berries also provide a good source of amygdalin. It is my rule to eat ALL seeds, except those which can chip your teeth such as rose hip seeds. Often I will put a few cherries pits and all in my blender when making a fruit drink, this will give you a good amount of amygdalin. Just don't drink the few large sometimes sharp pieces that sink to the bottom of your glass.

Sleep and Cherries

“Researchers found that drinking 8 ounces of tart cherry juice in the morning and evening for two weeks significantly reduced the severity of study participants' insomnia.”   Journal of Medicinal Food

“The researchers found that when participants drank cherry juice for a week there was a significant increase in their urinary melatonin (15-16%) than the control condition and placebo drink samples. The actigraphy measurements of participants who consumed the cherry juice saw an increase of around 15 minutes to the time spent in bed, 25 minutes in their total sleep time and a 5-6% increase in their ‘sleep efficiency’, a global measure of sleep quality. Cherry juice drinkers reported less daytime napping time compared to their normal sleeping habits before the study and the napping times of the placebo group.”   Cherry juice can help get a good night’s sleep, During the cherry harvest I find I often sleep like a baby on a tummy full of cherries.

Cherries an Extremely high ORAC Antioxidant Food

"Researchers have stated that tart cherries “have the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory content of any food.” Also, tart cherry compounds increase the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), your body’s key antioxidant enzyme. While tart cherries owe their potency in part to high anthocyanin content, their real secret is their extremely broad range of anthocyanins. As a result, tart cherries synergistically target a remarkably wide spectrum of oxidation- and inflammation-induced diseases."   Broad-Spectrum Disease-Fighting Properties of Tart Cherries

Freeze Your Cherries

During the cherry harvest you can pick and freeze cherries and feast on them for months. You must be careful washing cherries, they are a heavily sprayed fruit. I double wash mine but don't leave them sit in the water for a long time as you may lose some nutrients.

Dosing Tart Cherry Juice

"Many of the studies cited in this article use tart cherry juice. However, many people prefer to use a tart cherry extract to avoid the high calories and sugar content in tart cherry juice. For the purposes of comparison, two vegetarian capsules (1,231 mg) of the leading tart cherry extract are the equivalent to approximately 45 ounces of tart cherry juice.76 "   Life Extension Tart Cherry Product

IMO do not use sweet cherry juice or a sweetened tart cherry juice as you chief cherry product. Why screw with a good thing?

Life Extension has a pricy tart cherry extract that is worth the money. It costs twice the money but provides ten times the anthocyanins, with no sugar, artificial sugar or calories. I take one a day for prevention and two or more a day for treatment.
